Sun City Travel Softball Team places second in Tournament of Champions
This past weekend the Sun City Travel Softball Team competed in the 60 AA division of the ISSA Tournament of Champions where every team was a previous tournament winner in 2012. Sun City played a total of eight games over the weekend and defeated All Star teams from North Carolina, West Virginia and Pennsylvania to finish with a 5-3 record. In the second game of the tournament, Sun City found itself trailing a West Virginia All Star team 17-9 going into the last inning. But Sun City refused to lose. Pitcher Mike Coriale started the improbable rally with a single, which in turn was followed by two more singles and then two outs. So with two outs, Sun City scored seven runs with a key hit delivered by first baseman Dave Sauer who drove in the tying run with a line drive single thus advancing the winning run to third base. And then Mike Coriale put an exclamation point on the rally with a hard hit ball into left field to score Dean Waters with the winning run and a 18-17 victory
Sun City fought its way into the championship game by first defeating the eventual tournament winner, Spring Ford, a Pennsylvania All Star team by a score of 16-4. Then ran out of gas in the championship game falling to Spring Ford 26-11.
Manager Ross Glatzer said that this was an extremely competitive tournament because each of the teams we played was not only a previous tournament winner, but most of them carefully recruited select players from various towns and states for their teams. I am very proud of the team for their accomplishment this weekend. And we had by far the most enthusiastic fansâŠ.the playersâ wives⊠who we are deeply thankful for.
Shortstop Doug Baker and outfielders Red Kopytko and Tom DaParma made the All World team for their performance in the tournament. Each of them batted at least .750 and were the offensive catalysts throughout the tournament with a combined 57 hits. And they had a lot of help from their teammates. Pitchers Bob Lee and Mike Coriale pitched solid games against great hitters and distinguished themselves at the bat as well as on the mound. Sluggers Rick Dory and Don Feldkamp combined for 30 hits in the tournament. Infielders, Dean Waters, Rich Matera, John Heere and Dave Sauer combined for a total of 41 hits and played excellent defense throughout the games. And finally, Craig Waite, Bill Wealleans, Fitz Harding and Pete Bonanno added another 24 hits to the offensive attack.
Defensively Sun City turned more double plays than any team it faced. All in all an exciting weekend. Next up on the schedule is a tournament in Central Florida on February 23/24.
