The sun is warming our wide desert landscape and calling out to all fishing enthusiasts: Shake off your equipment and head out! 🌞🎣 Here are some of our favorite, more accessible fishing locations to enjoy this spring. 🐟

🏞️ Hike into the Box:
The Rio Grande Box, located above the confluence of the Red River, is one of our easier fishing locations. But beware, the hike into “the Box” can be challenging, especially in hot weather.

🌊🐟 Spend a day of serenity on the Rio Grande:
About 20 miles southwest of Taos on Highway 68 is an access route where you’ll find great fly and bait fishing; rainbows, browns, and northern pike populate these waters.

🦫🌿 Find tranquility at Rio Chiquito:
Rio Chiquito watershed is a great spot that is always less crowded. Many of the streams are less than 10 feet wide, but there are a few open areas and beaver dams scattered along the way.

Ready to cast your line? 🎣 Let us know which spot you choose!

Agnes Martin (1912-2004) was a leading figure in American abstract painting. 🎨

Although often associated with minimalism, Martin preferred to align her work with abstract expressionism, focusing on emotional content and inner truth rather than ideas. 💭

Her dedication to beauty and perfection set her apart in the art world. 🖼️

Martin’s connection to New Mexico was significant—she studied at the University of New Mexico in 1946, attended the Harwood Art Field School in 1947, and returned to New Mexico in 1968, living in Taos from 1993 until her passing in 2004. 🏞️

Come celebrate the life, legacy, and art of Agnes Martin with us for her birthday, tomorrow, March 22, at the . Stop by the museum store on your way out for birthday cake, blueberry muffins, and beverages to celebrate!

Museum admission is FREE all day for Taos County residents.

Maria Martinez (1887-1980) grew up surrounded by pottery, learning the craft from her aunt and grandmother. By 13, she was already recognized for her talent. 👩‍🎨

Along with her husband, Julian, she revived an ancient method of creating all-black pottery, which contrasted with the traditional red and polychrome designs that had been common for generations. ⚫

By the 1920s, her work had gained national attention, and her pottery became highly sought after as art. 🏺 Maria received two honorary doctorates, a portrait by sculptor Malvina Hoffman, and a 1978 exhibition at the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery. 🎓

Have you seen Maria’s work at the Millicent Roger’s Museum a few minutes down the road in El Prado?

Millicent Rogers, a Standard Oil heiress and fashion icon, arrived in Taos in 1947, captivated by the beauty and culture of the Southwest. 🌵

Known for her artistic flair, she was drawn to Native American and Hispanic art, collecting jewelry and textiles with an eye for design. 📿

Despite personal struggles, including illness and heartbreak, Rogers made a lasting impact on Taos, notably helping with the effort to return Blue Lake to Taos Pueblo. 💫

Her legacy endures in the community she embraced and the art she loved. 🎨

For Women’s History Month, we want to highlight some of the unique women that have made Taos great over the years. 🌟

Mabel Ganson Evans Dodge Sterne Luhan was born into wealth in Buffalo, New York, and became a salon hostess, art patroness, and writer. She was known to be a woman of contradictions – generous but petty, controlling but endearing. 💫

After the death of her first husband, she ventured to Europe and married Edwin Dodge for security. They settled in Florence, where she hosted salons for artists and writers, and her love for the avant-garde flourished. 🎨

After leaving Edwin, Mabel found a new life in Taos, New Mexico in 1918, where she met and married Tony Luhan. She transformed her home into a haven for artists, writers, and thinkers. Mabel’s legacy lives on in her writings, her home, and the vibrant cultural community she helped create 🌄.

Today, you can visit the Mabel Dodge Luhan House and stay within the same walls as greats like Georgia O’Keeffe, D.H. Lawrence, Ansel Adams, and Martha Graham.

“Agua es vida!” 💧

During your visit in Taos, you may have noticed small ditches running throughout the community. Have you ever wondered what these are? 🤔

For centuries, snow has played a crucial role in the lives of Taos locals. ❄️ The snowpack at the end of each winter season contributes to the local watershed, which is the primary source for irrigating local farmland. 🌾

The water that flows from these streams high in the mountains becomes this vascular system of water-carrying ditches, known as acequias. ⛲

Next time you notice one, stop to appreciate not only their incredible ingenuity, but the stunning history they represent—one that makes Taos so unique. 🌟

At 650 feet above the river, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is the second highest bridge in the U.S. Highway System and the fifth highest bridge in the United States.

After its dedication in 1965, the American Institute of Steel Construction awarded the bridge “Most Beautiful Steel Bridge” in the “Long Span” category.

Since then, the bridge has been tempting visitors from around the world to peer into the plunging cliffs of the gorge and the roiling river below. Others love to walk the stunning trail along the rim of the gorge in order to take in all the views.

Have you done the gorge?
