Essex County is located on Virginia’s Middle Peninsula that is bordered by the Rappahannock River to the north and King and Queen County on the South. Tappahannock is governed by a seven-member Town Council headed by a mayor. The agriculture and forestry industries are major contributors to the overall economy though it’s the Rappahannock River that remains the lifeblood for county residents. In addition to being a valuable source for those who make their living on the water, the river draws weekend visitors from urban areas that include Washington, D.C., which is 100 miles to the north, Norfolk, which is 95 miles south, and Richmond, 45 miles southwest. Outdoor recreational opportunities in Essex County include boating and fishing, golf, swimming pools, pickleball and tennis, and vineyards. Caret Cellars and Wind Vineyards are each located in the county. Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge offers kayaking, hiking, hunting and boating activities. Boutique shopping, farmers markets and a vibrant arts scene are central to this welcoming community. Tappahannock is home to multiple family owned restaurants, including many that feature locally inspired specialties from the river’s bounty.
