Recently across the state scammers have been victimizing families of inmates by contacting them and pretending to be officers of the court, or pretrial employees, and asking for their credit card information and funds to help their family member that is locked up. Pretrial Services or Court Officials will NOT contact you asking for money. Not long ago we put out a warning about people pretending to be police officers soliciting money in lieu of going to jail. Do not give your information or money to anyone over the phone regardless of who they say they are.

TAZEWELL COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ADOPTS
NEW POLICY FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

TAZEWELL, VA – The Tazewell County Board of Supervisors has passed a resolution establishing additional safeguards for nonprofit organizations receiving county funding.

The resolution requires nonprofits seeking financial assistance from the county to certify that they do not employ registered s*x offenders or have registered s*x offenders serving on their boards of directors.

“At our October 6th meeting we received a citizen complaint that a certain organization that the board has donated to and allowed to use county facilities had a board member who was a s*x offender. The board resolved going forward to require any nonprofit group to whom we donate funds to certify that
they do not employ s*x offenders or have any on their board. We are working on amending the application forms for these groups and getting notice to them that they will need to reapply.”

“Taxpayer dollars should be entrusted to organizations that uphold the highest standards of accountability,” said Chuck Presley, Chairman of the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors. “This action reinforces our commitment to protecting the public and ensuring responsible stewardship of county resources.”

The county will revise its application process and notify affected nonprofit organizations of the certification and reapplication procedures
