One of the Smoky Mountains' most beautiful drives, the Cherohala Skyway runs 43 miles between Tellico Plains, Tennessee, and Robbinsville, North Carolina. Completed in 1996 after 34 years of work, this National Scenic Byway climbs to over 5,400 feet through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests. The route offers sweeping mountain views, hardwood forests glowing with fall color, and spruce-fir peaks at higher elevations. Favorite stops include Indian Boundary Lake, Turkey Creek Overlook, and Santeetlah Overlook. There are no gas stations or cell service along the way, so be sure to fuel up and plan ahead before starting this incredible mountain drive!
