Finally had a chance to take the new GS for a bit of a woodsy workout.

This is a fantastic bike, we're going to have a great time together here in New England. It has all the potential of being as close to SWB HP2 BMW will ever offer.

The enduro option comes with big wheels, 18 in the back and 21 up front. This is a good thing but it does result in a setup that is geared a bit tall. This means a lot of clutch work and with a dry clutch a bit of risk for "smoking a clutch" in the woods, especially for a tough hill start or water crossings / mud pits.

I've been working with Max of MAX BMW to build up what I will affectionately call the HP2GS. It took a while and some communication with another Max who rode a factory prepped G/S in the Romaniacs but we are making good progress.

Today was my fist chance to ride the bike in the woods with the modified gearing and it's fantastic. It can tractor like the early GS Adventures, much easier to make the front light and come out of turns on pavement with less wrist. Most satisfied. Wheels from Woodys Wheels Works will make her track even better.

Next up is some time focusing on the suspension. While ESA isn't the best what it does well is go from firm for pavement and plenty bouncy for the rough stuff. Without ESA it takes some time to get the suspension just right.

19 years ago I was finishing up the build of a 2007 BMW RTP for the 07 Iron Butt Rally.

The on-line home of all things riding were forums and the first big one was called AdvRider.com which many credit as getting the world on board with riding motorcycles off the beaten path.

A user recently referenced a thread I started in April of 2007 about the lighting on the RTP.

It's aged remarkably well with comments from face to face friends who keep in touch to virtual friends I never did get a chance to meet.. It's interesting to read it again and have some genuine chuckles. It also highlights how much of our attention is being relentlessly chased on FB with none of the distractions carrying any real benefit.

If you'd care to read it, I'll apologize in advance because you'll have to sign up for an account if you do not have one. FWIW, My join date is September 2003.

Posted up at Toad's Place, aka the Tellico Overland Adventure Destination to make ready for March Moto Madness.

My sprinter van is heading toward the fabled "billion mile" prefix. There's going to a casino and there's doing a big drive in a German import that has multiple warning lights that will illuminate impending doom only to indicate all clear 80 miles down the road. It adds an undeniable spice to the trip and a burst of energy 500 cups of coffee could not match. Ditto for the resultant crash.

It was dry and clear when I left New England. The big find was a TA Truck stop that has a campground out back with hook ups for $30 a night. Far enough from the trucks for a good night's sleep with the heat on.

Stopped just before dark and got going at 04:00.

In March the wicked witch of weather is the jet stream and that bitch decided to grab my belt and hang on as I went south.

21 degrees and snow in southern Virginia. I shall forever be grateful for the gas furnace in the Casita. And the Pex plumbing

Fortunately the witch lost her grip and by the weekend it will be sunny at close to 80. I can't wait.

I'll confess I was a bit concerned about the price and availability of fuel for the trip. Finding diesel was not a problem and I budgeted for $5.00 a gallon and was able to hit that or better on every stop. I downloaded apps from Loves and Circle K which dropped the average down to 4.89. Between wanting to show the sprinter an easy trip and increase MPG I took a bit longer that normal.

It really is nice to travel with the bikes in the box while towing a fully contained fiberglass little house, aka Casita on trips like this. I can sleep and use a bathroom as needed, plus carry healthy food too. 14 mpg with a full load in the Sprinter and the Casita with full water and propane tanks.

The site is in fantastic shape. The Nerd Camp is something special. A few days of detail work, set up, and we'll be ready to host what looks like record crowd.

Last summer I rode my GS to Alaska and the North West Territories and back, via Nashville, Moab and LA and Glacier, Yellowstone and the Black Hills on the way home for a trip length of approximately 18,000 miles.

Highlight were numerous, peaking with a swim in the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk. Low point was a group crash on the Dalton highway with one rider needing to be medevac'd by an Army Blackhawk.

On Saturday February 28 I'll be at MAX BMW MOTORCYCLES New Milford location to share some photos, stories and tips from my trip. I think you will find it interesting, entertaining and if Alaska is on your bucket list, informative as well.

North to Alaska - A Rider’s Journey Last summer Rob Nye rode his 1250GS from New England to Alaska, the Northwest Territories of Canada and back, covering just over 18,000 miles.  Rob will be at our New Milford, CT store on Saturday, February 28th at 10:00 AM to share his journ

March 2010.
BMW is coordinating with dealers nationwide on the rollout of the BMW S1000RR, BMW's game changing superbike.

BMW NA shipped bikes to dealers in January but did not include keys; their plan was to FedEx keys to the dealers for delivery on Friday with the big reveal scheduled for the next day.

My dealer is MAX BMW Motorcycles and some people are surprised to find out there is really a guy named Max running the place. Part of why MAX BMW is one of the top shops in the country is Max is a master tech and thinks outside of the box.

Upon receipt of the motorcycle Max decided he'd really like to "dig in" but it had no key! Max being Max simply grabbed the vin and *ordered* a key through BMW and they sent him one!

A Saturday or two before the big reveal I was in the shop when Max suggested we make a video.

By the time I got home I had multiple voice mails from Max begging me to delete the video, like before it was shot. On a Saturday around 11am. Apparently BMW saw it and was hot. How hot? They sent a truck up to get the bike and wouldn't bring it back until the Friday everyone else got their keys.

The video was legend and has resurfaced. For your viewing pleasure I give you the first customer in North America to experience the RR.
