*San Juan Conditions Report*

Fall has officially moved in! Guides have been starting the day in puffy coats and warm hats, with Ouray at 39 degrees one morning last week and mornings hovering right around 40. Highs have been in the 60s, and cloudy starts have cleared out as the day goes on.

Up high, the Sneffels SW Ridge has been spectacular! Bring an extra layer and a warmer pair of gloves than you think you need. Ridge wind makes a big difference this time of year.

Both via ferratas are in good shape. The Telluride Via Ferrata trail is mostly dry and packed in, and the Ouray Via Ferrata route is running standard with light crowds.

This is one of the best stretches of the year to be out here! Cool mornings, thinner crowds, and fall light on the rock with yellow aspens all around.

Big snow in the Andes this winter means good water and less loose scree on the climb. It's shaping up to be a great season on the highest peak in South America.

SAN JUAN CONDITIONS REPORT!!!

Fall is showing off in the San Juans. Our guides on the Ouray Via Ferrata today described it as calm, warm, and clear, with the river below running big and loud the whole way across. Temps through the week have been sitting in the 60s, which is about as comfortable as it gets for a day on the cables.

A bit of rain moved through mid-week, and the routes are still holding some of it. The waterfalls on the Telluride Via Ferrata are running again, which makes for a beautiful backdrop, and a few spots on both routes are still damp. Guides are taking those stretches a little slower, so wear shoes with good grip and tread, and your guide will handle the rest.

Crisp mornings, thinner crowds, and golden afternoons make this one of our favorite times to climb. An early start still gets you the quietest route and the best light of the day.

Out west, desert season has arrived. Moab temps have dropped into the sweet spot for sandstone, and our Desert Crack Clinics kick off this weekend. If you've been wanting to learn, now's the time.

*ACONCAGUA 2027 – EARLY BIRD PRICING & DISCOUNTED PERMITS*

It's been a big winter for snow in the Andes. Aconcagua Provincial Park just announced the climbing season won't open until December 1 this year, so we've canceled our November expedition. But for everyone else, this is good news. Big snow means good water on the climb and a lot less loose scree to fight your way up. This is shaping up to be a great year on the mountain!

At 22,841 feet, Aconcagua is the highest peak in South America and the highest anywhere outside the Himalaya. This will be our 31st year guiding the “Roof of the Americas.”

We run it differently than most. Instead of the crowded Normal Route, we climb the Ameghino Valley and traverse the mountain, descending the Horcones. It's the best non-technical line on the peak and sees a fraction of the traffic. There are three camps on the upper mountain instead of the usual two, and with porters stocking the high camps, you're carrying 35 pounds or less.

SAN JUANS CONDITIONS REPORT!!!

September is delivering. Guides are reporting sunny mornings, sometimes warmer than forecasted, with clouds building around mid-day and the occasional afternoon shower still rolling through. The monsoon hasn’t fully let go yet, so the early start still matters.

Black Canyon season is here!

The Black is one of the most serious pieces of rock in Colorado, and fall is when it comes alive. Cool temperatures mean real friction on long days of granite and pegmatite. The summer crowds are gone. The days are still long enough to commit to big objectives without racing the light. And the Gunnison River running 2,000 feet below you never stops being remarkable.

It’s not a casual venue. Routes are long, the rock demands attention, and the descent is part of the climb. That’s exactly what makes it worth doing with a guide who knows the place. If Black Canyon has been sitting on your list, this is the window.

Closer to home, the via ferratas are climbing well with excellent morning weather. One note from our guides this week: There was rockfall observed on the Telluride Via Ferrata. No injuries, and our team managed it by spacing the group out through the exposed terrain rather than letting people bunch up. These are real mountain environments. Helmets stay on, and knowing how to move through exposed ground is part of why your guide is there.

We blinked and summer’s gone, which means it’s time to shift our focus to the desert southwest. Warm sun, beautiful sandstone formations, and endless crack systems. Not much else compares, and we hope you’ll rope up with us!
