*San Juan Conditions Report*

Monsoon season isn’t done with us yet. We’re still seeing the same pattern that’s held all month: clear, calm mornings that give way to building clouds and afternoon showers. It’s late enough in the season that you can feel it starting to loosen its grip, but not so late that you can stop watching the sky.

That said, the rock is coming into its best stretch of the year. Ophir is climbing great right now. The Dark Side and Ophir Wall both benefit from the cooler mornings, and once the summer heat backs off, the friction gets noticeably better. If you’ve been meaning to get on those walls, September is the month.

Out in the desert, temperatures are finally coming down. Moab and the towers are heading into prime season, and Black Canyon is right there with them. Sandstone needs cool, dry rock to climb well and stay healthy, which is exactly why fall is the season out there.

Mornings are the window. Get up early, get on the rock, and plan to be wrapping up as the clouds build. If you’re heading to the desert, give the sandstone time to dry out after any rain before you climb on it.

Fall is the best-kept secret of the climbing calendar around here. Cooler rock, thinner crowds, and the light gets better every week.

Join our Arc'teryx Fall Climbing Clinics!

The coming weeks are our favorite time of year to rock climb in the San Juans, and we had such a great turnout building our local climbing community last fall that we thought we’d do it again!

Beginning Thu, Sept. 3, we’ll be holding FREE and open climbing clinics for our local Telluride and Ouray communities to meet new climbing partners, sample local venues, and ask questions in a relaxed, supportive environment. Led by AMGA trained or certified guides, these clinics are completely free thanks to Arc'teryx, who is sponsoring the entire series. We’ll set up top-ropes, go over technical systems, and provide movement instruction.

Five clinics, each with its own focus:

• Sept. 3 - Traditional Climbing | Ophir Wall, Ophir, CO
• Sept. 10 - Fixed Anchors | Rotary Park, Ouray, CO
• Sept. 17 - Sport Climbing Tactics | Pool Wall, Ouray, CO
• Sept. 24 - Advanced Rock Movement | The Dark Side, Ophir, CO
• Oct. 1 - Rock Rescue | Pipeline Wall, Telluride, CO

All clinics run Thursdays from 4 p.m. until dark and pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 12 participants (10 for Rock Rescue), so we recommend registering early here: bit.ly/arcteryxfallclinics. A digital or paper waiver is required to participate.

First up: Sept. 3 - Traditional Climbing. Looking to learn more about trad climbing and how to place cams and passive protection? We’ll teach gear placements, nut placements, gear anchors, and trad-specific technical skills. Own trad gear? Bring it!

Required gear: Climbing shoes, harness, helmet, belay device and chalk bag. Bring any other personal kit you’d like to use. Participants should have a small background in climbing, including top-rope belay and tying a figure 8 knot, and own their own basic gear. (If you need gear, please contact our office ahead of your clinic.)

Instructors will reach out to all participants ahead of each clinic with any additional gear recommendations, as well as directions to the climbing venue.

SAN JUANS CONDITIONS REPORT!!!

Monsoon season continues to linger here in the San Juans. Throughout the week guides have reported clear, sunny mornings with drizzle and rain moving in during the afternoons.

The Telluride Via Ferrata continues to get progressively better as temps begin to drop! Guides report the route is in great shape, and the "Main Event" traverse above the box canyon is as good as it gets this time of year, with Bridal Veil Falls running below you. Remember that an early start is the key to a quieter route and better weather.

Up high, Wilson Peak is in prime shape. Late August in the San Juan Mountains is one of our favorite stretches of the year. Crisp mornings, dry rock, and long enough days to move comfortably on a 14er.

There are a few weeks of prime alpine season left, so come join us in Telluride and/or Ouray!

Which via ferrata is right for you?

Telluride Via Ferrata

It traverses the cliffs above the box canyon with Bridal Veil Falls in view for most of it. The "Main Event" is a long, exposed cable traverse with serious air under your feet. Big views, big exposure, and the most photographed via ferrata in Colorado.

Ouray Via Ferrata

It's down in the Uncompahgre Gorge with the river running below you. The Ouray Via Ferrata is comprised of vertical movement, a suspension bridge crossing, and is a completely different feel than Telluride. It’s a great first via ferrata and holds up just as well if you’ve already done one.

Via Ferrata Triple Crown

Telluride, Ouray, and Gold Mountain in one trip. This is the full tour for people who want the whole experience rather than a single day out, and it’s our recommendation if you’re making the drive and want to make the most of your time here.

A few things that apply to all three: No climbing experience required. Minimum age is 8. We provide all the gear, and your guide handles the technical side so you can focus on moving and taking it in.

SAN JUANS CONDITIONS REPORT!!!

The via ferratas are all-time right now. Guide reports indicate the routes are in great shape and tacky, with solid grip through both the Telluride and Ouray via ferratas.

The weather is classic for August up high. Cool and calm in the early hours, warming up fast once the sun hits, with clouds building throughout the day. Early starts are the move for this time of year. Mornings have been calm and clear and are the best windows to be on route.

A couple of things worth noting this week. Earlier starts mean fewer bottlenecks on route, and getting ahead of the crowds helps keep you clear of overhead hazard from other parties. Afternoon clouds are part of the daily pattern, so plan on moving early and being off the route before they build.

This is our favorite stretch of the year to be up there. Come climb with us before summer winds down!

Summer in Colorado is flying by and we’ve been guiding trips daily, from traversing the Telluride and Ouray via ferratas to summiting classic 14ers Mount Sneffels and Wilson Peak 😎

Our seasonal monsoon is rolling back through after a little dry spell, so temps should begin to cool down and make way for even better conditions in the alpine ⛰

It’s hard to believe that fall is right around the corner, but there’s still plenty of time to book a guided climbing trip in the beautiful San Juans 👊🏻
