Mountain Trip

Mountain Trip A small company guiding BIG mountains since 1973. Mountain Trip is Telluride, Colorado’s only AMGA-accredited guide service.

Since 1973, our guides have led expeditions on the world’s tallest peaks and brought that experience home to the San Juan Mountains for the telluride and ouray via ferratas, rock climbing, trekking, peak ascents, ice climbing, skiing, Seven Summits, Denali, Alaska, Everest, Aconcagua and mountaineering around the world.

This is the part of the climb everyone trains for. Teams at High Camp are dialing in for a summit push, and the teams at 14 Camp are getting ready to move up. The upper mountain is going to be busy in the days ahead. Proud of these crews.

It’s always a good day when our Arc'teryx fam is in town! We had such a great time hosting them on the Telluride Via Ferrata during Mountainfilm. It felt like a day in the alpine with old friends.

Caches going in on the ridge today!

The season is in full swing up in Alaska. With teams scattered across the mountain, we’re keeping a close eye on the forecast and hoping for summit weather to roll in soon!

Busy stretch on Denali. Our higher teams got a cache in up on the ridge yesterday, which is some of the most exposed terrain on the whole route, and now they’ve got their sights set on moving up to High Camp.

Meanwhile, our other teams are still grinding it out lower on the mountain, putting in the long, heavy days that build the foundation for everything that comes after.

We couldn’t be more proud of how all our teams have climbed so far this season. Denali asks a lot of everyone who steps onto it, from the weather holds in Talkeetna, to the haul up the glacier, to the thin air and cold up high. Every one of these crews has met it head-on.

Move days on Denali don’t always come with bluebird skies.

Sometimes it’s flat light, blowing snow, and visibility that turns familiar glacier into a guessing game. This is where a guide’s experience really comes into play. Reading wands, trusting the compass, and keeping a rope team moving safely when the world goes white.

Right now we’ve got teams making moves on the lower mountain in less-than-perfect conditions, pushing higher with skill, patience, and respect for what the mountain throws at them. Progress doesn’t always look like sunshine and summit selfies. Sometimes it’s a steady rope team disappearing into the clouds, doing the work.

Our first two teams of the season have officially made it to 14 Camp!

We have teams spread all the way from Base Camp up to 14 Camp at 14,200 feet, and the season is in full swing! 14 Camp is the staging ground for the upper mountain and a major milestone on any West Buttress expedition.

We’re up and rolling with our first Telluride Via Ferrata trips of the season!

Not much beats being in the San Juans alpine amongst the vibrant green aspens, snow-capped mountains, and gushing waterfalls 🍃 🏔️ 💧

Our teams made the most of yesterday's brief window, pushing around Windy Corner and dropping caches just below 14 camp. That window has since closed, and teams are back on hold, either pinned down at Camp 2 or grounded in Talkeetna.

Windy Corner sits at around 13,500 feet and is one of the most exposed sections of the West Buttress, often shut down by wind for days. Getting through it with a load of gear sets the team up to move fast when the next opening comes.
