This Wednesday, September 17, Big Bend waives the gate fee, one of just eight fee-free days all year. If you’ve been putting the trip off because the entrance fee felt like the tipping point, that excuse is gone for one day.
We’re 3 miles from that gate, dogs welcome, fire pit going by the time you get back from the trail. Fall dates are open right now and free-entry Wednesdays don’t happen often. Come use it.

Our first fall guest checked in last week, a mom road-tripping out to Big Bend with another mom and their four teenage daughters.

A storm rolled through on their stay and knocked the power out. Jason drove out to check on them and make sure they had everything they needed. They rode it out just fine, and this is what she wrote afterward:“This place was beautiful. Far enough to see the stars and close enough to go to the park.”

The BoHo Yurt is open again for the season, and we already have proof it was worth the wait.

That is the whole idea behind the Yurt. Full bathroom, kitchenette, real heat and air conditioning, three miles from the gate, open now through spring. Storm or no storm, it is a home base worth coming back to.

What you packed: the dog bed, way too many snacks, a headlamp you'll actually use. Where you went: into the park for the overlooks while the dog held down camp, then straight back to 30 private acres the second you were through the gate. What you did: let the dog explore the grounds, built a fire, watched the sky turn gold before the stars took over.

Monsoon season came through Terlingua and gave Terlingua Creek about a week and a half to turn green, and the whole pack found out before we did. Nothing like grass this tall to turn a morning walk into a full-on chase. It won’t last, the desert never keeps this color for long, but for now we’re letting them run it out. Out here, you take the green while it’s green.
