The Hidden Graveyard That Predates Our Town by 20 Years!

If you’ve ever taken a stroll past Breezy Hill Park, you might have noticed a quiet, shaded grove of oak trees enclosed by a simple chain-link fence. This is The Old Graveyard (historically known as the Pioneer or Irvine Family Cemetery)—and it holds a secret that challenges what most people think they know about our town’s timeline.

While the city of Terrell wasn't officially established until 1873 with the arrival of the railroad, this sacred plot of land was already here. In fact, it predates the settlement of Terrell by more than 20 years.

Long before there were tracks, storefronts, or modern streets, this land belonged to the pioneer Irvine family.

The very first person laid to rest here was Robert Alexander, the nephew of W.D. Irvine, all the way back in 1851.

As you scan the layout, you'll see historic, weathered headstones—including unique, ornate Victorian markers like that of Mary A. Bain (who passed away on a leap day: February 29, 1877).

A large granite memorial stands near the entrance, etched with dozens of names of early pioneers, neighbors, and descendants who quite literally cleared the paths we walk on today.

Looking over these grounds feels like stepping into a time capsule. Some graves are neatly bordered by antique wrought-iron fencing; others are completely unmarked, their stories lost to time. The final known burial took place here in 1956, closing a century-long chapter of local history.

The next time you drive past, take a moment to look at the historical marker. It's a humbling reminder that before our town was a bustling community, it was a rugged frontier—and the people who built it are still right here, resting beneath the oaks.

Have you visited The Old Graveyard? If you have family roots tracing back to the early pioneers listed on the monument, we'd love to hear your stories in the comments below!
