The "Third Man Syndrome" is a psychological phenomenon where people in extreme survival situations, such as mountaineering, polar expeditions, or solo sailing, report experiencing an unseen presence, often described as a third person, that accompanies them and provides comfort, support, and guidance.

This phenomenon was first described by Sir Ernest Shackleton, a British explorer, who experienced it during his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914-1917. Since then, many others have reported similar experiences, including adventurers, astronauts, and even people in near-death experiences.

The "Third Man" is often described as a benevolent, reassuring presence that helps individuals cope with stress, fear, and uncertainty. While its exact nature is unknown, it's thought to be a psychological coping mechanism, a manifestation of the brain's ability to create a comforting presence in times of need.

The term "Third Man Syndrome" was popularized by John Geiger's 2009 book, "The Third Man Factor: The Secret to Survival in Extreme Environments.
