This is a small town that works.

Located along the banks of the mighty Columbia River, just 84 miles east of Portland, The Dalles is the eastern gateway to the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. Our 300 days of sun nurtures bountiful agricultural products, including world-renowned cherries, grapes and wheat. Cyclists, geocachers, hikers, hunters, fishers, history buffs and wine aficionados are discovering our area. Steeped in history and culture, the area served as a center of Native American trade for 10,000 years. Lewis & Clark camped along our shores, and here pioneers on the Oregon Trail made the decision to brave the Columbia River or go overland topping Mt. Hood. With a population of 13,045 and a service area of 85,000, The Dalles is the Gorge’s new hi-tech hotspot, home to Columbia Gorge Community College, which offers the first wind power training program in the Pacific Northwest, the Mid Columbia Medical Center with its world-class Celilo Cancer Care Center, and a thriving business community. While Portland accumulates 37 inches of rain annually and, nearby Hood River County receives 31 inches, The Dalles receives only 14.41 inches. Living in The Dalles is simply sunsational!

The meeting discussed various community updates and initiatives. The Salvation Army and Saint Vincent de Paul hosted a hero event where 76 students received $100 gift cards. The Cherry Blossom Respite program has provided 155 hours of respite care to 15 participants, with 164.75 volunteer hours. The Small Business Development Center is offering three small business management classes. The city's urban renewal program has been successful, with 18 Sustainable City Year projects underway. The Mid-Columbia Housing Authority is constructing a new apartment complex for mentally ill people, veterans, and disabled individuals. The community is also discussing the need for a new high school.
