🌧️ Could those be rain clouds over Galicia?!

There are still active wildfires in the León/Ponferrada area along the French Camino, but the situation in Galicia—around Ourense and Santiago—has improved. Conditions are looking better, and there’s even talk that train service may resume as early as tomorrow.

Let’s keep hoping for more rain and continued progress! 🙏✨

As many of you know, wildfires are affecting several regions of Spain and Portugal this summer. At Hike The Way, our number one priority is always the safety of our pilgrims.

We are monitoring the situation closely with local authorities, guides, and partners on the ground. Routes may be adjusted if needed, and we will always choose the safest paths forward. Our team is prepared with contingency plans so that every pilgrim continues their Camino journey with peace of mind.

The Camino has always been a journey of resilience and trust. Together, we will continue walking safely, with gratitude for the path and care for one another.

For centuries, pilgrims have tied the shell to their backpacks to mark themselves as walkers of the Camino de Santiago. It’s a sign of welcome from fellow pilgrims, locals, and all the way to Santiago itself.

At Hike The Way, we make sure you’re ready for that first step. Before your trip, we mail you your very own scallop shell, so you can attach it to your backpack and feel that sense of belonging from the moment you set out.

They’re walking side-by-side for the next several weeks, soaking in the beauty of the trail and the time together before Ian heads back for his junior year of college.

We’re closely monitoring the wildfires currently affecting parts of Spain and Portugal—especially one near Las Médulas in León, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that lies along the Camino de Invierno.

As much as we’d love to keep our attention on the beauty and tradition of the Camino, real-world events like this remind us that nature doesn’t always follow our travel plans. We'll keep watching the situation closely and will share updates if any hiking stages or logistics are impacted.
