All are welcome here at our ! Come in and make yourself at home.
As an I was asked "What does inclusivity mean to you?"
To me, it's the feeling I get when i'm welcomed with warmth & friendliness no matter where or by whom.
It's when thoughts like, 'am I being treated this way because of how I look, or because I am an immigrant and a woman?' don't even cross my mind.

I love June the best 💘 There are peonies of every color, pick-your-own strawberries at nearby farms and the fireflies put on a nightly show. Plus the weather is perfect. Happy June 😊

This Spring, we enter our 10th year of hosting guests at the Barn. I (Bruna) did the math, and it looks like we have welcomed almost 3,000 people so far! asked us why we do it.

From the beginning, the Barn has been our creative outlet. Both Andrew and I have backgrounds in the visual arts and Andrew is a designer/builder. The original owner, Kathleen, had already done the hard work of transforming it from an animal barn into a creative retreat space, where Andrew and I had been one of her first guests, 15 years ago (I share this in a previous post). Once we took over, we wanted the space to match what we thought a historic Barn turned guest house should offer - homey comfort rooted in rustic simplicity & bohemian vibes, with the added bonus of modern amenities. We unblocked the big barn door and made it roll again, we re-created the kitchen and added a bathroom downstairs. We collaborated with artists who created beautiful, nature crafted pieces and we added rattan hanging chairs, marrocan rugs, reading nooks and lots of pillows. Once we got the interior to where we wanted we focused on the outdoors. We re-did the deck with wood that will last 30+ years, we amplified the outdoor shower and added an artisan made, cedar table for picnics by the pond. We cleared paths and added 2 fire pits!

We host to share what we create. And the more we share, the more we get to create. In stories I share 3 dreams that came true as a result of hosting.

Our big barn door first rolled open Labor Day Weekend 2012. We partnered with to give you a peek into our hosting journey which started 15 years ago around a fire pit.⠀

In the Fall of 2006, we were invited by a friend to spend a weekend at a barn upstate. We arrived at dusk and the first thing we do is head over to the fire pit. Andrew makes a large fire, of bonfire proportions.⠀

Through the flames we see a figure approaching, "who is it?" we all wonder in silence. We can see it's a woman with long silver hair. ⠀

"Howdy", she greets us heartily. "Howdy" we reply sheepishly, worried that our fire is too big and dangerous. "I am Kathleen and I am your host. I see you like fires, so do I. Keep it manageable. I live next door", she points to the cottage at the property, "and I'm here to help with anything you might need this weekend". Andrew strikes a conversation with her and a connection is made. ⠀

Fast forward 5 years. Andrew and I are now married with a baby. It's Christmas and we gift ourselves a little used car to zip around Brooklyn in search of real estate while our tiny kid naps in the back seat. The main requisite is that this future home also has room to welcome guests, the only way we could afford such an endeavor. We download the app where 'for sale' properties pop up on our phones as we drive by. ⠀

After weeks of searching and mostly finding beat up, way-more-than-what-we can-afford-properties, we come home completely discouraged. ⠀

That's when Andrew receives the email. It's from Kathleen, our host all those years ago, and it says, “I'm looking for the barn's next rightful owners”. ⠀

I get a rush of adrenaline and see the 3 vision board collages up in our living room: Plan A: The Urban Dream, Plan B: The Beach Dream and Plan C: The Upstate Dream. We look at each other and agree - Plan C it is; a cottage to live in and a barn to host guests at. Perfect. ⠀

We pack the cat & kid into our car and drive north to our new life in the Hudson Valley.⠀
Swipe and say hello.⠀
Head to stories for what we wished we knew before we started hosting. ⠀
-Your hosts, Bruna, Andrew + Luca ⠀
