I think a lot of people do not fully realize what goes into keeping historical haunted locations open and accessible for paranormal investigating.
These buildings are not small, simple spaces to maintain. Many of them are massive aging structures that constantly need repairs, restoration work, insurance, utilities, cleaning, staffing, safety upgrades, and ongoing maintenance just to stay operational for the public.
At the school, just two required projects within about a year’s time totaled over $100,000 combined. And those were only TWO projects that absolutely had to be completed in order to keep the location running and accessible, not including everything else that goes into maintaining a place that size.
People want heat. Bathrooms. Electricity. Safe access. Overnight accommodations. Clean spaces. Security. Historical preservation. Staff on site. Equipment access. Parking. Insurance coverage. Emergency repairs when things unexpectedly fail.
That all costs money.
So when people see paranormal investigations that are 4–8+ hours long and wonder why tickets are around $90–$100, it is important to understand that a large part of those ticket costs goes directly back into maintaining these locations and keeping them alive for future generations to experience.
Of course there are also smaller flashlight tours and public ghost tours that are more affordable, and those are amazing too. Everybody has different preferences and different budgets. But more immersive investigations, smaller group experiences, overnight access, guided sessions, and private investigations naturally cost more to host.
Urban explorers exploring abandoned buildings are also taking on trespassing risks, unsafe conditions, collapsing floors, asbestos exposure, injuries, fines, and no protection whatsoever if something goes wrong. In many cases, legally paying for a ticket or privately renting a location would still cost less than what someone could end up dealing with in court… or worse, risking their life.
Legal paranormal events are not just about ghost hunting. A lot of them are directly helping preserve history and keep these locations from continuing to deteriorate or disappearing entirely.
If we truly care about haunted history, then supporting the places that are still standing matters too.
