THE LEGEND OF SPEARFINGER
One of the older and most chilling stories passed down by the Cherokee is the legend of Spearfinger.
According to Cherokee tradition, Spearfinger was a witch with skin as hard as stone. Her most terrifying feature was her right forefinger, which was made entirely of rock and sharpened to a deadly point. With it, she was said to kill her victims with a single strike.
Legend says Spearfinger lived high in the mountains and wandered the forests searching for children. She could disguise herself as an elderly woman and earn families' trust before revealing her true nature. Once she had a child alone, she would rock them to sleep while singing softly, then use her stone finger to remove and eat their liver, which, according to Cherokee stories, was her favorite meal.
Whether the story was meant as a warning to keep children from wandering into the wilderness or was based on something people truly believed they encountered, no one knows for certain.
More than two centuries later, Spearfinger remains one of the most recognizable figures in Cherokee folklore and one of the most haunting legends ever told in the Appalachian Mountains.

There’s an old cemetery tradition involving a single black balloon.
Locals call it The Mourning Signal.
The story goes that when a witch wants to speak to someone who’s passed, she brings one black balloon into the cemetery, whispers the person’s name into the string, and waits.
If the balloon stays still, the dead are resting.
If it starts pulling toward a certain part of the cemetery, you follow.
And if it slips out of your hand on its own?
You don’t follow that one.
Someone spotted this woman performing the ritual near the old angel graves.
Just another evening in a town where even the dead apparently still get messages.
