Avoid surprise cell phone charges when you return home from a great vacation.
Check Your Carrier’s International Plans:
- It's always a good idea to start by checking with your phone carrier for any international plans. They often offer packages that give you a set amount of data, calls, and texts for a reduced rate.
- Use Airplane mode to avoid apps running in the background.
Use Wi-Fi Wherever Possible:
- Cruises often provide Wi-Fi packages. While they might not be free, they could still be cheaper than roaming charges. - Many destinations have free Wi-Fi hotspots, so encourage them to use these as much as possible.
Turn Off Data Roaming:
- Advise them to switch off data roaming to avoid unexpected charges. They can usually access this setting in their phone’s cellular or mobile data settings.
Use Messaging Apps:
- Recommend using apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, or Viber for calls and messaging through Wi-Fi instead of traditional SMS or calls.
Download Before You Go:
- Suggest downloading any necessary documents, maps, or entertainment before leaving, so clients aren't using data when they travel.
Local SIM Cards:
- Picking up a local SIM card can be a game-changer if they're planning to use their phone a lot overseas and their phone is unlocked.
Cruise Ship Apps:
- If they're cruising, checking if the cruise line has an app can be helpful. These often work without data charges onboard for accessing cruise information and booking activities.
