Kemp’s ridleys are the smallest of the sea turtle species, reaching weights of only 100 pounds, and are listed globally as critically endangered by IUCN. This species has a life cycle that makes it a commonly encountered sea turtle in U.S. waters, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast.

The Kemp’s ridley population has been heavily impacted by commercial and recreational fisheries and egg harvest, nearly causing its disappearance in the 1980s. Over the next two decades, binational conservation and nest protection efforts in Mexico and the U.S. began paying off with steady population growth. However, in 2010 the nesting population exhibited a serious decline and in subsequent years has been extremely variable. Attempting to understand why the Kemp’s ridley population’s growth has been disrupted is an ongoing effort and the reason this species was chosen as an SAFE conservation target.

I love Turtle nesting season! Please be mindful and fill in holes on the beach, take chairs home at night, clean up trash, no bright lights!

As the nesting sea turtles prepare to share their nursery habitat with us this holiday weekend, all we ask is to leave them alone. Please no white lights, flash photography, touching, or senseless destruction of protected nests. The entire beach strand and ocean are here for sharing and enjoyment.

Topsail Beach Craft Fair starts today! Go check it out. Lots of great vendors!

Today is the opening day of the Topsail Beach Craft Market! It is 9 to 1 and located at 802 S.Anderson Blvd., Topsail Beach. Parking for the market is located in the Assembly Building parking lot.
Come check out all the talented artisans! When you're done at the market have lunch, shop the local stores, and tour the Historic Assembly Building!
