🇪🇸 A Day in Segovia, Spain — Where Roman Engineering, Gothic Grandeur & Royal History Meet! 🏰✨
Robyn and I enjoyed an unforgettable visit to the historic city of Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where nearly 2,000 years of Spanish history come alive!
🏛️ The Roman Aqueduct of Segovia — Our first stop was this extraordinary feat of Roman engineering. Built nearly 2,000 years ago, its towering granite arches rise almost 94 feet above the city. Even more incredible? The massive stone blocks were assembled without mortar, relying on precision, balance and gravity. Originally designed to carry fresh water into the city, this remarkable monument remains one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in the world.
⛪ Segovia Cathedral — The Lady of the Cathedrals — Standing proudly in the heart of the old town, this magnificent Gothic cathedral was built in the 16th century, after its predecessor was destroyed during the Revolt of the Comuneros. Its soaring towers, elegant spires and intricate architecture reflect Spain’s religious devotion and artistic achievement during the transition from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance.
🏰 The Alcázar of Segovia — Our final highlight was this spectacular fairytale-like castle, dramatically perched above the valleys where two rivers meet. Originally developed as a royal fortress, the Alcázar served as a residence for the kings of Castile and played an important role in Spanish royal history. Its distinctive towers and slate roofs make it one of Spain’s most recognizable castles, and its appearance is often associated with the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella Castle.
From the ingenuity of the Romans to the spiritual grandeur of Gothic architecture and the legacy of Spain’s monarchs, Segovia offered us a remarkable journey through the centuries. Three extraordinary landmarks, each telling a different chapter of history.
