Monday Memory

It was this month back in 2021 when I visited Grand Canyon’s North Rim. I had been to the South Rim where most visitors go, but people said the North Rim is different. I wanted to see for myself. The North Rim was greener and the formations were closer than at the South Rim. The colors were vibrant. The limestone layer appeared strikingly white against the fiery reds. The North Rim was less crowded so it felt peaceful. Unfortunately, the Dragon Bravo Fire of 2025 destroyed many buildings including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge. Thankfully, plans are underway to rebuild after the fire.

Summer is coming to an end

The kiddos are heading back to school. The one question everyone asks is: Where did you go for summer vacation?

I checked off two more National Parks this summer: Rocky Mountain and Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. The Centennial State is a high-altitude playground. The altitude sickness is no joke but the views were outstanding. I made it up to Mount Blue Sky and Pikes Peak, two of the state’s 14ers. The experience was breathtaking on many levels, literally. 😂

More than sand at Great Sand Dunes National Park

Whooshing down and climbing up the sand dunes are probably the most popular ways to enjoy Great Sand Dunes National Park. A drive on the Medano Pass Primitive Road reveals another facet of the park - beaver ponds, Native American artifacts, and wildlife. However, you need a 4-wheel drive car to drive through the sand and streams of the Medano Pass Primitive Road. I didn’t have one, so I booked a tour with Dunes 4x4. My guide, Chris, expertly navigated the rocky road with ease in a Jeep Gladiator. He was our science and history teacher explaining how the dunes formed and the significance of the land to the Native Americans. Chris was even our sand sledding coach. Great Sand Dunes is much more than just a pile of sand. It’s a classroom and a playground.
