Our title character enters... this is Capitol Dome.
Clearly visible but easy to miss, this Navajo Sandstone formation which inspired the park's name, can be seen eastbound from Highway 24 in Capitol Reef National Park. We won't let you miss it.

Have you noticed vertical stripes on some rock formations? Surface run-off from rain stains the sandstone. The colors come from manganese (black) and iron (red and orange) in the environment. The process takes thousands of years. This wall of Wingate sandstone "desert varnish" can be seen on our Waterpocket Tour.
