“The Sunrise Shadow”
Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina
2025 Smoky Mountains Fall Colors Workshop

One of my favorite cell phone images in many years. On the 2nd day of the workshop I drove my clients to a vista to photograph the sunrise on the parkway. About 3 minutes after the sun rose, I turned around and noticed their shadows on the rock wall across the road. I was amazed at the detail and took this photo with my phone.

"Shadow of the Bear"
2025 Fall Colors Workshop
Cashiers, NC 10/21/25

One of the special moments of the 2025 Fall Colors Workshop was when my clients got to see and photograph the "Shadow of the Bear". Whiteside Mountain casts its shadow into the valley between Cashiers and Highlands North Carolina. For about 3 weeks every Spring and Fall the shadow appears to come alive due to the angle of the sun behind the mountain. But there is a catch. The bear does not make an appearance unless it is sunny from the time 5:30 and 6:00pm during those 3 weeks. Some years the bear never comes out to play and starts an early hibernation instead. Just kidding of course. This is always a favorite of my workshop participants and a memory they will never forget.

Our momma black bear came to visit today with her 3 cubs. We got several videos of them but the cubs stayed more distant from us. Here mom is showing them the art of rolling rocks in our creek. They use this hunting technique to find crawfish, salamanders and other small prey to eat. These foods are a supplement to the main and current food of acorns from our oak trees.

People often ask how I know where to find the Black Bears of the Smoky Mountains. My stock answer is decades of walking the woods, learning bear habitat and most importantly, knowing where the food source is located. This time of year it is blackberries in the fields and wild cherry trees at the edges of the fields.

People also ask me why Black Bears worry about eating such small things as ants, termites, grubs or even wild cherries. You must remember that us humans probably consume all of our food for a day in an hours time. Black Bears could spend 8 hours or half of their day eating their food. They also must consume whatever food is available to them at that time. Wild Cherries are similar to Wild Apples. Some years produce bumper crops and other years nothing at all. The key as a Wildlife Photographer is to know where the trees are located and keep a close eye on them year after year. The result is being able to acquire photos similar to these included in this post. I hope you enjoy them and thank you for following my page.
