05/07/2025
As of today, May 7, 2025, the federal REAL ID requirement is in effect across the United States. This means that to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities, U.S. residents must present a REAL ID-compliant license or ID, or an alternative acceptable form of identification such as a U.S. passport, passport card, or a Trusted Traveler program card (e.g., Global Entry) .
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a federally compliant driver’s license or ID card that meets enhanced security standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005. In New York, a REAL ID is marked with a star in the upper right corner, while an Enhanced ID features a U.S. flag and the word “Enhanced” .
Do New Yorkers Need a REAL ID?
Yes, unless you have an Enhanced ID or another TSA-approved form of identification. New York offers both REAL ID and Enhanced ID options. An Enhanced ID is also acceptable for domestic air travel and allows U.S. citizens to re-enter the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries without a passport .
How to Get a REAL ID in New York
To obtain a REAL ID or Enhanced ID in New York, you must visit a DMV office in person. Online or mail applications are not accepted. You will need to provide:
• Proof of identity: Such as a valid U.S. passport or birth certificate.
• Proof of Social Security number: Like a Social Security card or a W-2 form.
• Two proofs of New York State residency: Examples include a utility bill, bank statement, or pay stub with your current address.
• Proof of lawful status in the U.S.: This may be required for non-citizens.
Note: Documents with a P.O. Box address are not accepted. Additionally, if your name has changed due to marriage or other reasons, you must provide legal documentation of the name change, such as an original or certified marriage certificate .
The fee for a REAL ID is the same as for a standard license. An Enhanced ID costs an additional $30 .
DMV Availability
To accommodate the increased demand, select DMV offices in New York City and Long Island are open on Saturday mornings through June 28, 2025, for REAL ID processing . Appointments are recommended and can be scheduled through the DMV reservation system.
Traveling Without a REAL ID
If you do not have a REAL ID or Enhanced ID, you can still fly domestically using a valid U.S. passport, passport card, or a Trusted Traveler program card. However, temporary paper licenses are not accepted. Travelers without compliant IDs may face additional screening or potential denial at security checkpoints. It’s advisable to arrive early at the airport and bring an alternative acceptable form of identification .
