It has been brought back from the brink of extinction thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. Today’s ‘Tropical Tuesday’ takes us to the rainforests of New Caledonia to see one of the most unique birds in the world: the Kagu!

This bird is the only surviving member of its family, a living fossil found nowhere else on Earth.

Despite having wings, the Kagu is nearly flightless and spends most of its time on the forest floor, using its powerful legs to hunt for insects, snails, and lizards. To communicate, they emit a series of loud, dog-like barks and whistles that echo through the dense forest.

This bird is the only North American member of the penduline tit family! The Verdin builds an intricate woven nest that can be used for both nesting and roosting.
