This is the highest city in Texas.
Fort Davis sits in West Texas at an elevation of nearly 5,000 feet, surrounded by wide-open skies and mountain views.
The population is only about 1,000, but it’s home to Fort Davis National Historic Site, one of the best-preserved frontier military posts in the country. You can walk through furnished barracks, explore the museum, or take a short hike for sweeping views over the fort and the valley below.
The town itself is a little quirky. I didn’t always understand what I was seeing while exploring downtown, but that’s part of the appeal—you never quite know what you’ll stumble across.
We stayed at the historic Limpia Hotel, which is more than 100 years old. It’s a great value, full of character, and the courtyard is the perfect place to unwind after a day outdoors. And their chocolate chip cookies honestly give DoubleTree a run for its money.
There are only a handful of restaurants in town, but we grabbed a bite at Blue Mountain Bar & Grill, known for its chicken fried chicken and excellent French fries. If you’re staying at the Limpia Hotel, you’ll even get a small discount.
There’s also a pioneer museum in town, and the highways leading in and out of Fort Davis take you through some of the most scenic stretches of Texas, with plenty of interesting pull-offs along the way.
Fort Davis is also just about 20 minutes from McDonald Observatory and Marfa, making it a perfect base for exploring the region.
