SLIK- Service Learning in Kenya To provide high school and college students with a meaningful experience of volunteering and cultural

Since 2005 SLIK has been offering three week trips to Kenya where American students volunteer in the primary schools near the town of Naro Moru. With the guidance of Kenya teachers, the Americans learn how to write lesson plans and effectively pass on the information to classrooms full of excited young Kenyans. The Americans soon become welcomed visitors to the community. While it is the American

s who are doing the teaching, many discover that they learn much more about themselves and their view of the world.

What a wonderful weekend it has been following the return of the SLIK students from their mountain trip! We had the pleasure of hosting local students from Irigithathi Secondary School for a day of team-building activities and the high ropes course here at Batians View.

The students had a fantastic time—sharing experiences, embracing cultural diversity, and building lasting connections. The day ended on a truly high note, filled with joy and meaningful interaction.

We’re excited for the upcoming activities with the SLIK student program, both here at Batians View and in partnership with neighboring schools.

This morning, we left Batians View to visit several nearby schools, where the SLIK students had a wonderful time interacting with the Kenyan students. The students were thrilled to meet each other, share meaningful moments, and begin building connections. Everyone is now looking forward to more exciting and enriching experiences together in the classroom in the days ahead.

I'm excited for 2024, especially the next Service Learning In Kenya trip that is just over five months away! This will be my 19th SLIK program and if anyone seeing this knows of a rising junior or senior high school student who would like to experience Kenya as few visitors are able, please pass on the SLIK website at https://slikenya.com/.

Asante Sana to my SLIK students from last summer and their fund raiser Project Rafiki! Their goal is to raise $40K to purchase new school uniforms for 1,500 young Kenyans in the Naro Moru area and renovate six classrooms at one of the school associated with SLIK. I joined them in Toledo, Ohio for the kick off event and couldn't have been more proud of being in their company!

Was in Toledo, Ohio recently and had a blast of an evening hanging with 12 SLIK students at Avery Dale's home. I felt like we were back at Batian's View reliving our awesome SLIK experience last summer. I love these guys!!

My problem with these posts of past SLIK students is that I look at hundreds of photos that bring back great memories. Here are a few from 2009 with John Anderson, Arteen Arabshahi, Benji Brittenham, Elyse Buscema, Tricia Dunn, Tyler Goodwin, Rick Hamant, Abel Herrera, Caitlyn Hicks, Geoff Kroska, Christen Maguire, Adam Monson, Rachel Rosenberg, Claire Tatman
Sarah Tatman, Teddy Zeskind and Tracey Straight. Back then the SLIK program took place before the St. Gregory graduations, which is why the graduation photo is included.

I am so excited to be back in Kenya after an absence of 22 months due to the pandemic. Of course last year's SLIK program didn't happen but it is happening this year; in two weeks as a matter of fact with 14 students! This will be SLIK's 16th year of operation and to date there have been 190 SLIK students who have volunteered as teachers, helped with countless community service projects, hiked on Mt. Kenya and seen Kenya's amazing wildlife. The 2021 group arrives in two weeks which gives me almost enough time to honor past students with the group photos from over the years.

2005 Premier SLIK group L-R:
Fred Roberts, Ian Donnally-Taylor, P.J. Mathews, Candice Wetmore, Sarah Puchon, Josh Hamra, Eric Richard, and Elise Fazio. Missing from the photo is Jessica Savage.
