Today, a small reliquary began a journey across America. What it carries, however, takes us back to a poor fourteen-year-old girl kneeling in the mud near a grotto in Lourdes.
On September 18, 2026, the relic of St. Bernadette Soubirous arrived at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., opening a new national pilgrimage that will continue across the United States throughout 2026 and 2027.
The relic will remain at the National Shrine through September 20, accompanied by Mass, prayer and an immersive experience dedicated to the message of Lourdes.
Bernadette never sought attention. In 1858, she reported seeing a “Lady” at the grotto of Massabielle. She was questioned repeatedly and often treated with suspicion, yet she continued to describe what she had witnessed with remarkable simplicity. According to Bernadette, the Lady eventually identified herself with the words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.”
Bernadette did not become wealthy or powerful. She entered religious life and spent her remaining years largely hidden from the world. The Church canonized her in 1933.
The reliquary now traveling through America does not contain Bernadette’s entire incorrupt body, which remains in Nevers, France. It contains an *ex ossibus* relic—a small fragment of her remains—entrusted to the Sanctuary of Lourdes.
Catholics do not worship relics, and a reliquary is not a magical object. We honor the saints because their lives remind us that holiness was lived by real human beings—with real bodies, real suffering and real fears. Their remains point beyond themselves to the God they loved.
Perhaps this is why the arrival of Bernadette’s relic matters. America is not simply receiving a historical object. It is receiving a quiet invitation from the girl of Lourdes: return to prayer, make room for God and do not believe that an ordinary life is too small to become holy.
