TBT - The high-speed hunter!
The word kayak translates as 'hunter’s boat'. The kayak is a fast and maneuverable craft made from the very prey that it helps capture. It is constructed entirely out of naturally occuring materials - primarily of sea mammal skins stretched over a wood and bone frame. The paddler is secured into the cockpit with a seal skin jacket with a waterproof seal.
Kayaking was traditionally a male occupation, and the kayak was made unique for it's paddler and custom fitted to his dimensions. Using anthropometric measurements, typically three times the paddler's height (same as the arms stretched out), and the width was measured as his hips plus two fists.
The kayak and larger open top Umiaks enabled a way of life in the far north around the Arctic Circle.
Think about that next time you sit down for a paddle!
