At 69, Matt Dwyer (Matt Dwyer) might be our oldest rider, but heā€™s fit as a fiddle, crushing every climb thrown his way. His goal for the Grand Depart was to push his limits without overwhelming himself, and he seems to be hitting the mark so far. Slow and steady, heā€™s working through his 8-day plan, which included a hotel stay last night where he did laundry and Camp Bluestone tonight, which has a hot tub.

Matt was surprised to see there werenā€™t more riders his age, but heā€™s hopeful theyā€™ll see the beauty of the Endless Mountains and come out to experience it themselves.

Endless Mountains Day 4!Ā 

The middle-distance course shut its doors today after the last rider closed the loop. The lantern rouge on the 250 was affectionately referred to as ā€œthe beard with the BOBā€. Derrick Pero missed registration and didnā€™t have a tracker, but rode the route with his friends anyway, BOB trailer in tow. He didnā€™t want to spend money on all the specific bikepacking gear, so he took a ā€œrung whatcha brungā€ approach, adding that it seemed to add stability to his rig.Ā 

Out on the 430, Brian Lovett (Brian Lovett) was our only finisher today, clocking in at an impressive 78h 21m when you consider all the detours and waiting around he did to source a replacement tire early in the race. Nicole Maniez (nicole) continues to crush her 50th birthday trip, currently sitting as the fastest woman on the 430 this year.Ā 

The midpack, which our Media Team affectionately calls ā€œThe Colombians, Canadians, and Threeā€™s Company (the Americans)ā€, cruised through the land of viaducts and rail-trails. Each group was angling toward a different destination despite all starting from the same hotel this morning. ā€œThreeā€™s Companyā€, aka Cyndi Janetzko (Cyndi Janetzko), Hannah Aune (Hannah), and Garrett Linebaugh, undoubtedly ended up with the best accommodations at Camp Bluestone I Events + Lodging with private cabins and a hot tub.Ā 

The back of the pack is chugging along, and we will bring more stories from them tomorrow.Ā

Dots started pinging before dawn as a thick fog sat over the region. In Tunkhannock, Race Director David Landis (David Landis) and the Media Team gathered for their first breakfast, joined by a few weary cyclists. With bellies full of carbs and coffee, plans were made for the riders to resupply in Nicholson.

Time moves a little slower in the midpack. Theyā€™re savoring the views, getting adequate sleep, and even taking time to do laundry. But they still have goals that require big days on the bike, and they intend to stick to ā€˜em.

The Pumpkin Walk will return to Creekside Gardens in Tunkhannock starting September 19! Wander through their beautifully decorated grounds to see thousands of pumpkins on display and shop right from the displays. šŸŽƒ

Admission is free. The Pumpkin Walk is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10am to 4pm through November 1.

Endless Mountains Day 2! The riders spread across all four counties of the Endless Mountains Heritage Region.

On the 115, all riders made it back to Towanda, including the first Womenā€™s Team, first Menā€™s Team, and first Acoustic/E-bike Hybird Team. Thatā€™s not a real category, but maybe it should be!Ā Touring 115 riders had their fair share of climbs to conquer today, most notably the road up to Sunfish Pond. Leroy Mountain Road gains 900ā€™ over 1.5 miles. Its average grade of 12.1% maxes out at 14.7%, which was too steep, even for the e-bike.Ā 

The middle-distance route saw lots of action yesterday, with the Menā€™s podium solidified before sunrise and Jessica Nankman (Jessica Geist Nankman) winning the womenā€™s race. Elodie Burlet (Elodie) began an ITT yesterday morning and rode through the night attempting to smash the FKT. Half of the 250 riders are still out on course, with most likely to finish sometime today.Ā 

Out on the eastern half of the 430, Dennis welcomed the first riders to his legendary aid station, just before they tackled notorious Helenā€™s Hill. Benjamen Shrewsberry (Ben Shrewsberry) and Nicholas Holtz (Nicholas) logged several miles together after a shared breakfast at the Tunkhannock McDonalds. A local dot-watcher, Lorenzo Christian (Lorenzo Christian), joined the crew for a stint, too. Scott Coblentz (Scott Coblentz), hanging onto third place, found the ideal bivy spot under a wedding tent after the party left. JoĆ«l Nankman (Saucon Valley Bikes) rode straight through the night, passing Scott and closing the gap between himself and the leaders. The 430 has a large number of party pacers, with many people finding shelter early to prioritize sleep and enjoying the scenery during daylight hours.
