Shout out to the one, the only, the very dedicated Caretaker of Little Wolf Campground Paul Mullen! He has quietly been dedicating his own time and materials to refurbish this original campground sign, which hung at the intersection of Main Street and Washington for many years. Be sure to take a look at it next time you drive by the lifeguard hutte 👀

Here's today's PHOTO OF THE DAY!!! This blast from the past takes us to the old "Oxbow" Bridge, a well-known local landmark that once stood over the Saranac River in Cadyville, New York. Built during the winter of 1897 by the "Berlin Iron Bridge Company" of East Berlin, Connecticut, the bridge and roadway were constructed to provide access to the new "Plattsburgh Paper Company" mill just downstream from the crossing. The design selected for the new bridge was a sturdy type called the "Pennsylvania (Petit) truss," named after the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was once used for hundreds of bridges in the United States, but fell out of favor in the 1930s, and very few examples survive today. The Berlin Co. erected the 180-foot "Kent's Falls Bridge" in less than two months that winter, following a successful bid for the project of $2668.00 (over $103,000 today). The firm had previously built two other spans in our area: the famous "Swing Bridge" in Keeseville, and a railroad bridge that once crossed the Au Sable Chasm. Tragically, incidents of drowning among swimmers always plagued the spot, with accidental deaths recorded here in 1980 and 1986. Citing its deteriorating condition, the bridge was eventually closed to vehicle traffic in 1993 and finally removed in 2020. What are your memories of the old "Oxbow Bridge?"

New York State Route 3 (NY 3) is a major east–west highway that stretches across northern New York, covering a distance of about 245 miles. It begins at an intersection with NY 104A in the village of Sterling in Cayuga County and extends northeast all the way to the city of Plattsburgh in Clinton County, where it terminates at U.S. Route 9 near Lake Champlain.

The route travels through a diverse range of landscapes, including the scenic Adirondack Mountains, rural farmland, and small towns. It serves as a vital corridor connecting the Lake Ontario shoreline with the Adirondack region and the northeastern part of the state. Along its path, NY 3 passes through notable communities such as Fulton, Watertown, Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, and finally Plattsburgh.

One of the most distinctive features of NY 3 is its extensive run through the Adirondack Park, offering drivers access to lakes, forests, and mountains. It also closely parallels the U.S. Army’s Fort Drum installation near Watertown. The route supports both local travel and tourism, especially for those visiting the Adirondacks.

NY 3 has existed since the 1920s and has seen multiple realignments and improvements over the years. It remains one of New York's longest and most scenic state highways, playing a key role in connecting central and northern parts of the state.

The Plattsburgh end of Route 3

Here's today's PHOTO OF THE DAY!!! Who remembers this place??? It's the Plattsburgh "HoJo's" on Route 3, seen here back in the late 1960s! Believe it or not, the iconic, orange-roofed restaurant and motor lodge at Plattsburgh was actually designed as Howard Johnson's "flagship" location, first opening in May of 1965. Its construction coincided with that of the "Adirondack Northway" (I-87) connecting Albany to Canada, and also in anticipation of "Expo 67," the 1967 World's Fair held in Montreal. The new restaurant was to be a showcase of mid-century modern architecture, the first of its kind anywhere in the Nation. Howard Johnson's executives referred to this cutting-edge prototype as "Concept 65." When completed, the location was dubbed "the restaurant of the future," featuring a swimming pool, a practice golf course, and 28 flavors of ice cream! The Plattsburgh Howard Johnson's was even featured (in set form) in a 2012 episode of the AMC TV series "Mad Men" entitled "Far Away Places." Variations of the original Plattsburgh "Concept 65" prototype were later built in Miami, Nashua, Atlanta, Glens Falls, Dallas, Niagara Falls, Lake George, and other locations across the U.S. Although this structure still exists today (now a "99" Restaurant), it was heavily remodeled after closing down as a Howard Johnson's in the late 90s and, sadly, little survives of the original, trend setting jet age design.
