DOURO SUMMER DAY
Pinhao — Our stalwart group of 40 from Ficklin Vineyards in Madera CA and our own Bacchus W**e & Travel Society are no strangers to summer heat. Still yesterday was a scorcher in Pinhao, over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

We did the town walking tour in the morning, before it got really hot. At 11:45am it was on to historic Croft Estate to have vineyard walk, an explanation of the estate’s five century history and current century old grapevines. Then relief from the heat — a delicious Portuguese country lunch, comfortably air-conditioned.

CYCLING ALONG THE RHONE — VIVIERS
One of the many enjoyable activities on a European river cruise is a guided bicycle ride. AmaWaterways ships carry 20 high quality, sturdy 3-speed bikes, which are offloaded and waiting in each port.

Led by a local guide, you’ll typically cycle 6-16 miles over 2 to 3 hours. In the Rhone Valley port of Vivier we did an 8 mile ride, along the banks of the swiftly flowing Rhone, then a short ascent to this beautiful, medieval hilltop town.

I flew north, crossing the Golden Gate at 34,000 feet in sunshine. The rain started Wednesday night and hasn’t let up. However, four days of rain doth not keep a good man down. Napa and Sonoma are soggy this week, but moments of beauty appear.

Just completed my 4th consecutive summer trip aboard the American Angler. This is an annual 3-day charter on one of the very best sportfishing boats out of San Diego.

This year was tough. The “super moon” cooled off the bite, making the big bluefin tuna we target very finicky. Still the camaradrie is great. This group of diverse individuals has been fishing together for years now. We lock these 3 days in lste August into our calendars as sacrosanct.

Western Pacific Bluefin Tuna grow to weights of 300 lbs. / 150 kgs. When you hook one of these brutes a battle royal ensues that results in sore muscles, incredible highs if you land one, or just as often crushing defeats. Just one fish will provide enough sashimi-grade filets to last a year. It’s epic stuff that keeps one coming back. 😎
