As you may have heard, our friends at the Tybee Sea Turtle Project have officially declared that weβve entered hatching season! Soon, hundreds of baby sea turtles will emerge from their buried nests and make the difficult and dangerous journey across Tybeeβs beaches to the warm waters of the Atlantic. We need YOU to help clear the way!
π Remember to collect ALL of your belongings when you leave the beach. Any amount of litter, from plastic bags to discarded beach toys, can be a matter of life or death to baby turtles!
π’ Please refill any holes you dig and flatten sand castles before you leave! These are insurmountable obstacles for hatchlings!
π Remember to turn off exterior lights and avoid the use of flashlights on the beach! Artificial light can disorient hatchlings, causing them to wander away from the water. This often results in their death through dehydration or predation.
π’ Remember that sea turtles are Federally protected. Itβs important that you do not touch, handle or try to collect the hatchlings. If you find a turtle that appears sick, injured or lost, you can contact the Tybee Island Police Department at (912)786-5600. We will work with our partner organizations to ensure the turtle gets the help it needs.
With YOUR help, we can ensure that these beautiful animals continue to thrive for generations to come!
