Royal Caribbean is changing its cancellation penalties on October 11, and the change costs real money in one specific window.

The 25 percent penalty tier is going away. Right now, cancelling a week-long cruise between 89 and 75 days before you sail costs you 25 percent of the fare. After October 11, that same cancellation costs 50 percent. On a $5,000 booking, $1,250 becomes $2,500.

The second change is quieter and affects more of my clients. Cruises of 10 nights or longer move into a new category where penalties start at 120 days out instead of 90. Plenty of British Isles and Alaska itineraries run 10 to 12 nights, so those trips just lost a month of penalty-free cancellation.

Sailings of four nights or less are unchanged.

If you already have a Royal Caribbean cruise on deposit, don't assume you know which schedule applies. The reporting has been inconsistent on that point, so I'm confirming it booking by booking.

Two things matter more now than they did last month: watching that 90 or 120 day line, and the travel protection you buy. I can sometimes place clients in group space where the deposit stays refundable, which takes the pressure off entirely.

Normally by September I am telling people the Christmas markets sailings are gone and to look at next year instead. Not this year.

Several lines added December departures, so there is still real space, and some of it is discounted, which almost never happens on this trip. What you have lost is the choice, not the trip. Late November and early December are tight. Mid-December is where the room is.

One date decides more than the line or the ship does. Most of the German and Austrian markets close on December 23, so a Rhine sailing that leaves after about the 20th stops being a full markets week. If the week straddling Christmas is your only window, go Danube or Prague instead. Salzburg, Vienna's Schönbrunn and Prague's Old Town all run into January.

River cruise or ocean cruise, and why? No wrong answer here, I book plenty of both, but I'm always curious what pulls people one direction or the other.

That bronze fellow climbing out of the pavement is Čumil, and he is about a four minute walk from where our ship tied up in Bratislava. No bus, no port shuttle, no hour of the day spent getting to the good part.

That is the thing about river cruising that surprises people most. The ship docks in the middle of town and you walk off into it.

When is the best time for a European river cruise? It depends on what you're after. Spring brings tulips and lighter crowds. High summer means long warm days and the most touring hours. Fall leans into w**e country and harvest. And the Christmas market sailings in December are their own thing entirely, all lit up along the river. There's no wrong season, just one that fits you better. Which one's calling you?

A debate for the comments. When you travel, are you a plan-every-day person or a leave-room-to-wander person? I've got clients firmly in both camps, and the best trips usually land somewhere in the middle. Where do you fall?

For Alaska, should you cruise or stay on land? For most people the honest answer is both. The cruise gives you the glaciers, the whales, and the coastline you can only reach from the water. The land side, especially by train toward Denali, gives you the interior and the wildlife the ships never get to. Put them together and you see two completely different versions of Alaska on one trip. Which half sounds more like you, the water or the interior?

Alaska's 2028 season just opened for booking, and two years out is the right time to be looking. The best cabins and the Denali cruisetours go first, and the month you pick changes the whole trip: June through August for the warmest weather and the most wildlife, May and September for quieter ships and better fares. I sell Princess, Holland America, and Viking Ocean up there, and I match the ship and the season to how you actually like to travel.
