Very talented artist and beautiful studio very close to ToGather Point. He will be missed.
On Thursday, March 28, artist James Ingwersen announced to the public that he was donating his home, studio, gallery and surrounding property to the Peninsula School of Art, a move that gave him great satisfaction. Two days later, about a month shy of his 96th birthday, he died, content that the vision for his property he had pursued for most of his days since his wife, Phyllis, died in 2018, would come to fruition.
Ingwersen had spent several years investing substantially in his 1860s era farm to ensure its future, and in presenting his sprawling collection of his artwork. He held musical events, showings and presentations on the grounds, bringing a new generation to the property where he had fulfilled hundreds of commissions over 55 years painting portraits in Liberty Grove.
He was part of the group of artists and creatives who descended on northern Door County in the late 1960s and early 1970s and created the art scene as we know it today. People like Jeanne and David Aurelius, Anne and Minnow Emerson, Karsten and Ellen Topelmann, Amanda DeWitt, Norb Blei, Chick Peterson, Paul and Carol Sills and many others came to the county and made art and creativity a primary part of the community’s identity.
