Very interesting.

On this day, 150 years since the desperate aftermath of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the wounded survivors finally reached the steamboat Far West after a grueling two-day march. Chartered by the U.S. Army for the 1876 campaign, the Far West became an unlikely lifeline on the Missouri River—its decks turned into triage, its cabins into recovery wards. Under captain Grant Marsh, the boat did something extraordinary: after taking on the wounded at the mouth of the Little Bighorn, it raced nearly nonstop—by lantern light, hugging shifting channels and sandbars—to deliver the injured to care and carry the first detailed news of the disaster to the outside world.

Here’s a quieter detail: Marsh reportedly stacked barrels of buffalo tallow along the rails to rub on the paddlewheel shaft, improvising lubrication for the record-breaking run. That dash made the Far West a communications artery as much as a hospital, shaping how the nation learned of Custer’s defeat and the larger war against the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne. In the tragedy’s wake, the boat’s voyage stands as a testament to logistics, grit, and the lives saved in the shadow of loss.
