Figgy Brownies! This summer, my husband Kizzy P and I had loads of figs from the tree in our yard. We ate them fresh with yogurt, made jams, wrapped them in prosciutto, put them on pizza, and yes we even put them in some brownie batter and if these are not the best brownies I’ve ever had… the roasted figs give the brownies a deep earthy caramel flavor and fudgey consistency. And since they contain a bunch of fruit, that makes them healthy, right? 😉 Fig season may be over but this recipe is a keeper.

This is probably not what you’re here for, lol. But this is what I’m doing. I’m making the most perfect plate of spaghetti al pomodoro I possibly can, and I’m writing about it. Spaghetti al pomodoro is one of my favorite things in the world. I’ve spent years trying to recreate this simple dish I fell so deeply in love with in Italy at home in Atlanta, and by making my own passata from homegrown tomatoes, I finally feel like I’ve broken through. Don’t worry, this isn’t turning into a food blog. But on Substack, this essay did turn into a bit of a food memoir and how this simple dish came to symbolize what it meant for me to feel at home in Italy. 🍅 link in bio

Years ago while I was living there, I strolled through an empty side street in Lecce. The hot sun of the afternoon cast dramatic shadows, while cool pockets billowed from the shade. I felt as though I were swimming, and a hidden current brushed my limbs with water from deeper places. With no one else around, I watched the ferns that grow out of the cracks of the tufo. And in the stillness, I heard the walls whisper to me that we belonged to each other, as though this were a clandestine encounter that would hook me and call me back over and over.

This is where my daydream began, and in 20 years, it hasn’t ended. Now I’ll be leading a retreat this fall in the Pugliese countryside—imagine slow days, a farmhouse set in an ancient olive grove, and this landscape of untamed beauty and inspiration. ✨ Join us to pursue your own Independent Study.
