As the waters warm each spring, bottlenose dolphins begin making their way into the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries- including the Rappahannock River.

May is often one of the first months locals start spotting them cruising near shorelines, chasing fish, and traveling in pods.

These dolphins are usually following food sources like menhaden and other small fish that move into the river as temperatures rise.

While they may look playful (and they are!), they’re also skilled hunters using teamwork and echolocation to navigate the water and catch prey.

If you’re lucky enough to spot them:• Keep a respectful distance• Never try to feed or touch them• Slow down if you’re boating nearby• Enjoy the moment quietly and let them do their thing

Seeing dolphins in the river is a reminder of how special life on the water can be this time of year. 🌊

I promise I didn’t say anything funny… that ‘laugh’ is just a Laughing Gull vocalization used for communication—everything from alarms to territory to keeping track of each other in busy colonies.

They’re also highly adaptable, often nesting and feeding around piers, rooftops, and other human-made structures.

Ever seen a Green Heron?

These beautiful birds are just starting to return from their wintering grounds in the southern United States and South America.

They are one of the few birds to use tools. These herons will often drop small leaves or sticks on the surface of the water to lure small fish close to their striking range.

Last year we watched a couple nest & successfully raise young.

Book your tour to find out and maybe spot a Green Heron!

Since returning in early March, the Ospreys on Urbanna Creek have been feeding heavily and getting settled back into their nests.

Over the last few weeks, eggs have been laid, and the moms are now doing what they do best—holding down the nest and keeping those eggs warm.

If all goes well, we should have tiny fuzzballs hatching in about 5–6 weeks, which makes mid to late May an ideal time to catch a glimpse of newborn chicks.

After that, you’ll have plenty of chances to watch the parents feed and care for the chicks as they grow, right up until they begin leaving the nest in early to mid July.

Book your tour now to witness one of nature’s best displays of parental care from the water.
