It is time flutter in to another Wild Facts Wednesday!

Millions of monarch butterflies migrate nearly 3,000 miles to Mexico and the California cost every year to spend the winter! With the same wight to distance ratio, that would be the equivalent of a robin flying to the moon and back! These butterflies must begin this journey each fall typically in the months of September and October in Illinois.

Male monarch butterflies have two pheromone glands shown as black dots on their hindwings, females do not. These spots give off a scent (pheromones) to attract female butterflies.

Monarchs have a specialized diet and only feed on plants from the milkweed family. These plants contain toxins, and monarchs can retain these toxins and use them for themselves, making them poisonous to most vertebrates! Their bright orange and black coloration serves as a warning to potential predators. It tells them, “Hey! I taste bad and could make you sick!”
