Photos from our Iceberg tour on the Columbia Glacier terminal moraine this past Tuesday. We paddled around some very impressive glacier ice on the north side of Heather Island before traveling through a series of tidal passages that led us into the temperate rainforest environment around Heather Bay. In Heather Bay we paddled up a couple of different rivers looking for salmon and did a small hike to a beautiful lake in the Muskeg. The contrast between the icy glacier environment and the temperature rainforest is a beautiful thing and the Columbia Moraine is the perfect place to see the transition.

The fish are in and sawmill is the place to be! Sawmill bay is an epic paddling location if you’re interested in seeing wildlife like salmon, bears, sea lions, sea otters, ect. Pro tip…if you’re heading out to Sawmill it might be worth bringing a ziplock or extra water bottle to fill up on blueberries

Couple of videos from Columbia Bay today. It’s worth noting that we’ve been seeing an extreme amount of ice working its way from the face of Columbia Glacier to the mouth of the bay, often making the crossing to Glacier Island and beyond. We’ve had to rearrange our last several trips due to this dense ice floe but the alternative trips have been incredibly epic in their own way. Especially noting the fact that this zone is so wickedly unique that ice floes similar to this cannot be found anywhere else in the state. When you’re prepping for a trip anywhere in Alaska it’s worth packing an open mind and a sense of adventure.
