How much does an iceberg change over the course of a summer? From April till early October? The icebergs at Valdez Glacier Lake can lose over 20ft off the surface and sides, while also slowly melting below the surface. As they lose weight they rise up out of the lake. The red lines on the images below depict the same points after about 4.5 months and this was a relatively cool summer this year.

PSA: The eastern edge of Valdez Glacier has a large canyon that opened up this last spring which is obvious to see. More of the canyon has emerged south/down hill of the open part.

!!! There are sections of the glacier that appear normal and flat, which have the canyon beneath them. It is possible to walk on what appears to be flat normal glacier, when in reality it's a 30ft+ span of ice that's only a foot thick with a 200ft+ deep chasm beneath it.

Avoid the eastern edge of Valdez Glacier within a few hundred feet of the moraine.

In other observations, Valdez Glacier has begun opening along the east side below the ice dam.

At 10:04 this morning we caught an iceberg calving from Glacier Lookout. Be careful out there.
