🌿 Wildflower Wednesday: Western Snowberry

You might walk right past it without giving it a second thought, but Western Snowberry is an important little piece of the prairie. 🌾

Also known as Wolfberry or Buckbrush, Western Snowberry is a native shrub found throughout the Great Plains, including Nebraska. Its small pinkish-white flowers bloom in summer, followed by clusters of distinctive white berries that can stick around into fall and winter. 🤍

A few fun facts:

🤍 It can grow into large colonies from underground rhizomes.
🤍 It's a common shrub in prairie and grassland habitats.
🤍 Its dense growth provides cover and habitat for wildlife.
🤍 It's surprisingly resilient and can regrow after fire.
🤍 Those white berries are one of its easiest identifying features as the seasons change.

Another reminder that there's a whole world of life hiding in the prairie if you slow down long enough to look.

No baby pictures because our baby has not yet arrived! However, our heart is full of gratitude. Two students from Frontier School of the Bible gave up their weekend to help take care of our home in Nebraska that's many hours from the school. They also dropped off some of our lamps at the Golden Prairie Bison in Valentine, NE. You can now purchase these lamps at the gift store at Golden Prairie Bison. Have a blessed Sunday and we will keep everyone posted on our baby status.

The long drives.
The big skies.
The muddy boots.
The quiet.

And getting to share a little piece of it with others. 🤎

Wildflower Wednesday: Western Wallflower

This week's prairie find is the Western Wallflower!

The western wallflower (Erysimum capitatum), also called prairie rocket, is a showy native North American biennial or short-lived perennial in the mustard family. It features dense clusters of fragrant bright yellow, orange, or deep red-orange four-petaled flowers and grows upright from 1 to 3 feet tall.

It provides abundant nectar for native bees, butterflies (such as swallowtails and painted ladies), and other beneficial insects. And it acts as a larval host and food source for specialized native butterflies like the sara orangetip.

Will you remember this one?
