What did this storm uncover in the Venice Boneyard?

Between the storm surge and heavy waves, there’s a good chance some new fossils have been exposed!

Of course, storms can work both ways. They can uncover incredible fossil beds or bury productive areas under fresh sand.

Either way, we’re excited to get back out there and see what changed!

This week should be interesting! 🔥

Most people would never recognize this as a tooth! 👀🦴

Check out this incredible fossilized armadillo tooth recovered from our new stretch of the Peace River!

Unlike the sharp teeth of sharks or the grinding teeth of horses, ancient armadillos had simple, peg-shaped teeth designed for crushing and grinding food.

During the Ice Age, Florida was home to several species of armadillos, including much larger relatives of the ones we see today.

What makes fossils like this so cool is how easily they can be mistaken for ordinary pieces of bone or rock. That distinctive oval chewing surface is one of the clues we look for when identifying them.

It’s another reason to slow down and check everything coming out of your sifter!

We’re already uncovering some incredible Ice Age fossils in this new area, and we’re just getting started. 🔥
