🦈 Fun Fact Friday: Pier Secrets & Shark Teeth!

⚓Happy Friday from Venice Florida Tours! Today, we are diving into two local icons: the Venice Fishing Pier and the famous Sharks Tooth Festival! 🌊🎣 The Venice Fishing PierThe First Pier: Built in 1966 for just $133,877, the original pier was completely washed away by a massive storm in 1981. When rebuilt, engineers used Greenheart lumber imported from South American swamps. It is so dense it resists water damage without any chemicals! Today’s Pier sits 20 feet high, stretches 720 feet into the Gulf, and the depth at the end averages 16.5 ft deep.
🦈 The Birth of the Shark Tooth Festival:
Venice is the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World” thanks to a 10-million-year-old fossil bed just offshore. In 1992, co-owner of Sharky’s co-founded the very first Sharks Tooth Festival right at the restaurant! What started as a small beachside meetup at Sharky’s has exploded into a massive annual spring tradition bringing thousands of fossil hunters to Venice.

They don’t make them like they used to. 🔨✨ For today’s , we are taking you inside a 1926 time capsule! The owners of this incredible shop decided to tear out their modern flooring. What did they find underneath? The completely intact, gorgeous 100-year-old original floor! 😍📜Instead of covering it back up, they are restoring it and using it going forward. Talk about keeping history alive!

Did you know that our vibrant local streets are a canvas for talented local artist Coleen Henry? 🎨🖌️ If you’ve admired the stunning murals around town, chances are you’ve already seen her beautiful work!
Here are a few quick facts about how she keeps our community colorful:
🌺 Blooming Homes: Coleen partners with Venice Heritage, Inc. to paint gorgeous hibiscus flowers on local houses.
🍊 City Pride: The orange hibiscus isn’t just a pretty flower—it’s our official city flower!
🏛️ Centennial Celebration: She is currently hard at work painting a brand-new centennial mural on the back of the Old Betsy Museum building! Old Betsy Museum 🚒
