Floridaloha

Floridaloha We are a cozy subtropical oasis in the Nokomis Historic District with one luxurious vintage "Old Florida" 1/1 bungalow we call Casa Nokomis.

We are very close to beaches, the Legacy Bike Trail, rented by the week, the month or the season. Two lovely "Old Florida" style vacation cottages, on a small peninsula just blocks from Shakett and Curry creeks, steps from Dona Bay and a half-mile as the crow flies (five minute drive) to Nokomis Beach on the Gulf of Mexico. We are in the Nokomis village historic district, along with four antiques shops and five restaurants in easy walking distance. Welcome to Floridaloha!

Undamaged 1/1 Historic Nokomis Cottage

10/16/2024

Dear friends, and previous and potential guests. Our Floridaloha properties have survived both Helene and Milton without any damage besides some yard debris. There was no storm surge or flooding at all, and power was only off for a day. We were supremely lucky, as many other properties were flooded and otherwise severely damaged. We are still without internet service or phone service. WiFi is available at a variety of restaurants nearby.

Our area is recovering slowly, but recovering. Many retail businesses and restaurants have reopened, however beaches are still closed because the access to the keys is limited to residents only at this time. Venice Island main streets are in good condition and businesses there are reopening.

Our 1/1 garden cottage, Casa Nokomis is available for rent through the end of December at this time and we plan to add some seasonal availability weeks in 2025 soon. We hope you will consider a visit and help support our community‘s recovery. Every tourist tax dollar spent here will go toward replenishing our beaches and public parks.

I’ll report again soon with more information as I have it. If you have any questions please post them and I will try to answer the best I can. Best wishes and Aloha, Nancy

A trio of juvenile bald eagles are wheeling and chirping above us at Floridaloha today, likely fledglings from the nest at Oscar Scherer State Park, just 4.5 miles north of us on US 41 in Osprey. It’s a wonderful time to visit this beautiful park, easily accessible by car, or by biking up the nearby Legacy Bicycle Trail. Take a look at all the things you can see and do at Oscar Scherer. https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/oscar-scherer-state-park

An unexpected oasis surrounded by busy urban areas provides visitors with a refreshing escape into natural Florida. This hidden gem is also a refuge for the imperiled Florida scrub-jay, bald eagles and other birds that nest along the shores of Lake Osprey.

Our favorite Florida history and travel blog, Florida Rambler, has a wonderful story about Spanish Point, a post-Civil War pioneer waterfront homestead property and museum you can explore just six miles north of Floridaloha on US 41 in Osprey. There you can inspect a cross section of a prehistoric Native American burial mound, and learn the story of FL pioneer industries of the late 19th and early 20th century, including turpentine production and citrus farming. The gardens are beautiful and there's so much to see, with lots of walking trails and historic buildings to explore. It's a "don't miss" on any visit to Floridaloha, easy to get to, lots of parking, and just a glorious day to revel in "Old Florida." https://www.floridarambler.com/historic-florida-getaways/historic-spanish-point-osprey-fl/

Witness thousands of years of history in this Indian midden at Spanish Point through a glass wall, and learn about the Palmer family's profound impact on Sarasota County.
