What a day on Santa Rosa Island!

On September 22, CIR members and friends crossed from Ventura Harbor for our Autumn Equinox Cruise. Guests explored Cherry Canyon with botanist Steve Junak, hiked to Carrington Point with Dave Edwards, walked the coast with Rachel Metz, learned about the island's geology with Professor Sabina Thomas, and heard Chumash stories and island history from Professor Jennifer Perry and Julie Tumamait-Stenslie. Longtime volunteer Greg Giloth and board member Caleb Stumberg led the full Cherry Canyon loop.

Every ticket went straight to our East Santa Cruz Island Restoration Project, including our restoration work at Cavern Point in partnership with Channel Islands National Park.

Fry’s Harbor is a remote and scenic destination on Santa Cruz Island that features a small rocky beach, remnants of an old quarry, and limited hiking access up a natural drainage along a creek bed. There is a cobblestone beach for picnicking and a protected cove for snorkeling. This trip also includes a visit to Painted Cave, one of the largest sea caves in the world. There are just a few weeks left in our Summer Whale Watch season, and the sightings reports have been unique this year! Swordfish, sea turtles and hammerhead sharks have been spotted along with our "regular" visitors the Humpbacks. And just yesterday a Blue Whale.
