The hot tub is full. Not mostly full. Full.
We have a new problem out here, and it's a good one: what do you do with this much success?

These 7 to 10lb bugs are organized. Every time a new bag goes in, they put in yet another demand that we provide a way for their friends to join in. They tell us the Peace is such a good time that it would be rude not to invite everyone. At least we agree on that!

The visibility has been record-setting at all the islands. The water is in the 70s, so divers are wearing less neoprene and staying in longer. Lings, vermilion and lobsters galore are coming aboard. The lobsters looked at all of that and decided this is where the party is.

It's no wonder the final trip of the Peace is sold out. Four days ago we had four trips with space. Now there are two:

After that, the tub belongs to the lobsters for good.

🦞 HOT TUB UPDATE: SAN MIGUEL ISLAND 🦞

The tub is once again closed to humans until further notice. 🦞

This trip went out to San Miguel, and the lobsters claimed the hot tub well before sunset at the end of day one. They have since let us know the tub has the best sunset view on the boat, and they intend to keep it that way.

The bugs out here are different. Most of them are running 4 to 7 pounds, and there are several 9-plus-pound bugs aboard. These are those bigger lobsters we were warned about.

And it isn't only lobster. Multiple lingcod over 30 inches came up the swimstep, along with some huge vermilion, and scallops galore. The galley has never been busier.

There is one thing we need to keep quiet. Fresh lobster was served at dinner. We closed the galley door, kept the butter below deck, and told anyone who asked that it was "chicken." If the lobsters in the tub find out, we're not sure the crew makes it to Day 2. Please do not mention it in the comments. They can read.

Now they are demanding their friends be allowed to join them. They would like you to know there is still space on the remaining trips, and that they are expecting company:

🌙 Crescent moon rising over a sunset on calm seas, with Santa Rosa Island glowing on the horizon. Not a bad way to end a day of diving.

This trip has been one for the books: limits of lobster across the board, great visibility, and the kind of calm conditions that let us reach rare, beautiful sites we only get to dive a few times a year. When the ocean opens up like this, you go.

🦞 Day 3 of Trip 2 🦞

The lobsters have been watching us eat. The divers on this trip have been coming up with limits of scallops and bountiful fish, and it has all been going straight from the back deck to the galley. Fresh seafood on every plate. And every night, a row of antennae sticking up over the edge of the tub and livewells, following every fork.

The lobsters held a meeting about it and they want in. Their position is that they have been living on this boat for days and nobody has offered them a single scallop.

So theirs demands list has grown:
Scallops, fresh, cut on deck where they can watch.
Fish, same day it comes over the rail.
First pick. They were firm on this.
More divers, because the ones we have are apparently not keeping up.

So we are asking on their behalf. They want more divers aboard, and they want those divers bringing up fish and scallops. Bring a speargun, a (bigger) bag, and a gauge.

🦞 A STATEMENT FROM THE CREW OF THE PEACE 🦞

New trip, new divers, same problem.

The hot tub has been taken over again. We cleared it out after the last trip and thought that was the end of it. It was not. Another gang of lobsters showed up and it started all over, only bigger.

This time it wasn't even a choice. Every livewell on the boat is now full. They weren't when we left the dock. They are now, and the hot tub is where the rest of them went.

They have worked out that they outnumber us many times over, and it has gone to their heads.

They've started making demands. We've been told to describe them as "reasonable requests."

The galley no longer serves anything with butter.
The gauges are to be kept where they can see them.
They get the back deck after dark.
Livewell lids stay open. They like to keep an eye on us.

They also want to approve anything we post from now on. They insisted we add this: they want more divers. They have friends and family still down there and they'd like them brought aboard. They were clear that this is where you come in.

So, at their request, bring a extra large bag, and a gauge:

🦞 MEANWHILE, ABOARD THE PEACE 🦞

The treaty lasted about a day.

A new trip left the dock, and the lobsters who heard about the hot tub were already waiting. These are not the ones we negotiated with. These are bigger. We now believe the first group was the welcoming committee.

Today's developments:

They have started trying on our fins. Size Large is too small for those big tails.

One has claimed a full set of dive gear and won't get off it until someone explains the regulator.

One of our divers is somewhere behind a lobster in these photos. We'd tell you who, but we can't see him either.

Nobody has checked on the hot tub. Nobody wants to.

They keep getting bigger and we're running out of trips. Space left on:

🦞 ATTENTION ALL HUMAN PASSENGERS ABOARD THE PEACE 🦞
The hot tub is no longer available for human use.
The lobsters have arrived in numbers we can only describe as "organized." After tense negotiations on the back deck, the tub is now luxury crustacean housing. They want the jets on and the heat off. They were very clear about that second one.

House rules:
No sharing the tub. They're spiny in places you don't want to find out about.

No butter on deck. They can read.

We're told more are on the way. We did not ask how many.

ADVENTURE TOUR OF THE ISLANDS: SPEARFISHING IS IN By popular demand, our November Adventure Tour now allows all legal take, including spearfishing. It's also the only 5-day lobster trip on our calendar.
On our September Tour of the Islands we dove kelp forest lit up with garibaldi, walls covered in sea fans, bait balls flashing in the sun, and nudibranchs in colors that don't look real. Big bugs were already walking the reef, waiting for October.
That trip was look-but-don't-touch. In November, bring your speargun, lobster gloves and game bag. Yellowtail, halibut, bonito, bugs: if it's legal and in season, it's fair game. The crew plans dives outside the reserves and will tell you before each dive whether a site is open to take.
Bring a valid California fishing license and lobster report card.
Hot food, a hot tub, and four or five dives a day. Only 18 spots.

Season opens at 6pm on Friday, October 2. There are a couple spot we have been holding in reserve.

This is the last opener the Peace will ever run, so we're doing it as an invitational. Divers who have been on an opener with us or are friends of the boat get first call.
