This trip is designed around providing divers the best experience the ocean has to offer during the tour. Memorable adventures are had by diver who remain flexible, enjoy the journey, and appreciate each destination for its own unique character. Priority of site selections will be based on weather, sea conditions, visibility, and the best diving opportunities available.

Divers may experience spectacular kelp forests, offshore pinnacles, abundant marine life, sites known for rarely seen species, opportunities to interact with sea lions and seals, marine sanctuaries, and areas where the legal harvest of game is permitted.

Everyone at the Peace Dive Boat is sending our best wishes for a speedy recovery to our good friend Russell Zanetti as he recovers from a serious injury suffered while he was in Hawaiʻi for the U.S. Spearfishing National Championships.

Russ has frequently joined us aboard the Peace and has always been a huge supporter of our spearfishing trips and the spearfishing community. He is a friend of the boat, so hearing about his injury hits especially close to home for all of us. The photos we're sharing with this post are from Russ' successful hunts on the Peace last month.

Russ shared with us that he was injured when another competitor's speargun discharged. According to Russ, the gun had apparently remained loaded after a hunt. He described his injuries to us this way: “Missed my heart by 2 inches but hit my lung and the shaft went through my body.” Obviously, this could have had a much worse outcome.

Russ has asked that we share his experience to help promote speargun safety and the importance of education in the spearfishing community.

Spearfishing is an incredible and safe adventure sport when we respect our equipment, our environment, and each other. We applaud those shops that take the extra time to educate divers on the use and safety of their spearguns, especially those that offer in-water training.

But safety is not just for new divers. Familiarity can sometimes make even very experienced divers comfortable with things they shouldn't be comfortable with. Speargun safety is a part of diving safety and has to remain at the foundation of our activities.

For those of us at the Peace, that lesson is especially important. We travel to remote offshore locations where help can be a long way away. We are constantly balancing the adventure of this recreational activity with safety. This is why we have and will continue to stress safety in our onboard passenger briefings before each and every trip.

As Russ put it, “It’s not real until it’s real and we, as spear fishermen, need to hold each other accountable for having safety be at the core of what we do.”

Please help us get Russ's message out there. Share this post with your fellow divers, spearfishing clubs, dive shops, and dive buddies. If sharing his experience causes even one diver to stop, think and make a safer decision around a speargun, then this is a story worth sharing.

Russ is hopeful to be back in the water within six months. Right now, we just want to say:

Get better, Russ. Your friends at the Peace are thinking about you, pulling for you, and looking forward to seeing you back on the boat and in the water!
