Discover your family's roots at the Ladson Genealogical Library, a local treasure housing over 30,000 resources for tracing your Southern heritage.

The Ladson Genealogical Library is located in the Dr. Mark and Tonya Spivey Library, 610 Jackson Street Vidalia, GA 30474. The library hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

A History of the Ladson Genealogy Library
1931
A well-known and respected member of the Vidalia community, John E. “Jack” Ladson Jr. began collecting genealogy material at age 19 due to a strong interest in his own family history. His passion for the field prompted many of his friends to pick up the hobby, and soon his private collection became a mini-public library, which circulated between friends and other researchers out of his home.

1979
The Ladson collection continued to grow and by 1979 had reached 35,000 volumes and it could no longer be housed in his private residence. Due to the continued interest, Mr. Ladson decided to move the material to his downtown Vidalia offices on Church St., in the original city hall, and formally created the John E. Ladson Jr. Genealogical & Historical Foundation Library.

2004 - Present
Prior to his death, John Ladson Jr. deeded the collection over to the Ohoopee Regional Library System. In 2004, what used to be the basement in the old Belk building was renovated and became the new location for the Ladson Genealogical Library. In 2023 the collection was moved to the main location on Jackson Street and housed as a separate collection in the public library. This made the collection available at regular hours of operation and consolidated staff and resources. The collection contains hundreds of local historical photos and documents the staff are working to digitize and make available. This library and staff work closely with the local community and government agencies to preserve local historical resources and provide research needed for projects. The collection contains hundreds of rare books with the oldest dating back to 1640.
