We've had a few questions about whether people are "supposed" to dress up for the Bridgerton style Regency events coming up at Vincennes State Historic Sites Sept. 11-12 and the answer is you don't have to, but if you want to, you won't be the only one dressed up. These events can sell out, though, and with refreshments being provided for the tea, don't plan to walk in for this one, as there's limited space.

A RELEASE FROM The Open Gallery

"Portraits of People You Hate" is an exhibition curated by Victoria Shinkle for The Open Gallery and we are pleased to announce its opening reception this Friday, Sept. 4 from 5-8 p.m.

This show has received a great deal of publicity due to the nature of its theme. Rush to judgment throughout the community has seen this show disparaged and subjected to its own forms of "hate." Those have been mostly reactionary and, as I have tried to assure, most decidedly not politically motivated, although there is a small political element to one artist's work.

The collection in this exhibit does provide a strong reminder of the damage that hate can cause to ourselves and to others. Like all good art, these works express a range of vision and experiences with the destructive power of hate as it is directed at both an individual and as it works in our cultural institutions.

Works include many mediums: sculpted pieces, photographs, paintings, mixed media, paper constructions, and an installation, each with a uniquely individualized take on this most universal of emotions. Even though many individuals feel they can and have mastered it in their lives, if we are truly honest with ourselves, we know that it can often rise in each of us, unbidden, but still potent. That is precisely why it is such a good f**t as the subject of an art exhibition.

You may not have an opportunity to view such a unique show anytime soon, although we know that, currently, our world is fraught with the demonizing of those whom we find on the other side of the wide political and cultural divides.

We look forward to seeing you at First Friday Art Walk Vincennes from 5 - 8 p.m. The show will run through the end of September.
