Luckily I'm a creature of habit and generally stand in the same place when taking photos at the eruption overlooks, so I was able to find a couple of comparison images that demonstrate the rise in the floor of Halema'uma'u Crater during this current eruption series. The top photo is from our most recent Episode 29 on July 20, and the bottom is from Episode 7 on January 28. I've read that the floor has risen 426 feet during the eruptions that began on 23 December 2024 and was remarking to someone in my comments yesterday that it's not easy to get a sense of the difference unless you can compare images. So Clint, this one's for you.
Notice how the South Vent (on the left) used to erupt, but nowadays it just "smokes", and notice how the wall of the caldera at left has been built up from the accumulating tephra (you can just make it out behind the plume).
As an aside, I'm glad I lost my camera in the desert earlier this year, because I can see that the image quality got a lot better with my newer one 😄.

As we await the 30th Episode of Kilauea Volcano's unprecedented eruption series that began last year on Dec 23, I thought I'd show you some of my shots from past episodes. The USGS reports that 137.1 million cubic meters of lava have erupted during the whole of this series, and that the floor of Halema'uma'u Crater (where the eruptions are taking place) has risen 473 meters since its post-collapse status in 2018. Halema'uma'u Crater floor now sits at elevation 991 meters (3251 feet) -- approaching the elevation of the surrounding Kilauea Caldera floor that sits at elevation 1075 meters (3527 feet) above sea level.
USGS preliminary estimate for the start of Episode 30 is next week around the 30th of July.

I spent a long time sitting in the misty rain, in the presence of a persistent rainbow, waiting for the weather to clear for a shot at Kilauea's Episode 29 eruption on the morning of 20 July 2025. Looking through my photos afterwards, I eventually realized that the ever-present rainbow was the show this time, and the eruption an accompaniment. The forest plants were looking beautiful, adorned with sparkling rain drops, and I feel a renewed gratefulness for my experience on that day 🥰.

Kilauea's Episode 29, on 20 July 2025, fountained about 300 feet high and persisted for over 13 hours with high volumes of lava erupting from the North Vent into the caldera, as the South Vent emitted steamy gases... USGS reports than an estimated 1.8 billion gallons of lava erupted during the episode, covering approximately 80% of the crater floor 🫨. Notice the White-tailed Tropicbirds in the video, flying as close as they dare to the lava geyser!

Kilauea Volcano's Episode 29 erupted early this morning, 20 July 2025, and it is still putting on a show! The fountaining never got very high, and the morning was filled with rain and mist, but the upside was a rainbow from my vantage point that lasted for what seemed like hours. Having missed the unbelievably dynamic Episodes 27 and 28 while we vacationed on the mainland earlier this month, I did feel a bit let down but I'm certainly glad to be back on the Big Island of Hawaii!

While we were in Sandpoint, Idaho earlier this month, and Todd was out cycling in preparation for his upcoming "Crusher in the Tushar" race, I decided to hike the nearby Mickinnick Trail that rose more than 2,000 feet in 3.5-miles through forest and meadows, to an overlook with grand views. Somehow, though, my sights were drawn to the tiny things... to the wildflowers along the trail and to the insects that loved them... What great beauty in the small things 🩷

On our recent vacation to the mainland, Todd and I did a 14 mile day hike through Montana's Glacier National Park along the Highline Trail from Logan Pass to The Loop, with a side trip up the Garden Wall Trail to a 7,000 ft elevation overlook of Glacier Lake. The trail went through diverse terrain with epic sights into moody clouds, heart-stopping drops from the cliff edges, traverses of fast-flowing waterfalls, sweet walks through flowered meadows, and scrambles over loose skree. This trail had everything, and we thoroughly enjoyed it! At the end, we made use of the park's free shuttle system to get back to the car. Another wonderful national park!👍

Watch the mineral-rich water from Yellowstone hot springs travel downslope while depositing travertine on the ever-changing terraces, creating formations that resemble stalactites... in the intriguing Mammouth Hot Springs area.

On our flight to the mainland, from which we've just returned, we disembarked in Idaho and I saw it for the first time. Wow, I loved it! As we wait for Kilauea Volcano's Episode 29 eruption here on the Big Island of Hawaii, I thought I'd show you some of the scenes from that beautiful state that I captured as we moved through it.

This is an eruption of the small Sawmill Geyser in Yellowstone. It sure took me by surprise as I was walking by, and it absolutely startled and delighted me!

We were off-island for a few weeks visiting the states of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming where I'd never been before. My absolute favorite place was Yellowstone National Park with its volcanic landscapes so different from ours here on the Big Island of Hawaii. We walked among spouting geysers, boiling streams, thermal pools, travertine terraces, bacterial mats and bubbling mud. What an incredible area 🤯
