If I had one night in Venice, this is exactly how I’d do it.

Private water taxi. A room overlooking the Grand Canal. Ch*****ne on a boat ride past the sights. Dinner away from the busiest streets.

Then I’d wander. Stop for the musicians playing in the streets. Let the crowds disappear. And end the night with a gondola ride through the quiet canals.

Venice is completely different after dark—and that’s the version I’d go back for.

If you’re new here, hi—I’m Jamie.

I firmly believe where you eat can be just as important as what you see.

I’m drawn to beautiful hotels, incredible meals, local w**e, hidden gems, and trips with enough breathing room to actually enjoy where you are.

I’m also not much of a city girl. I want to see the cities, but I don’t want them to dominate my itinerary. Give me the small town, the little village, the back road, or the place I almost drove right past. I want to travel slower and actually experience a destination.

I also live and travel with an ostomy, which has taught me how to adjust my plans and travel a little differently. Ostomy life hasn’t stopped me from seeing the world, and I have no plans of letting it.

Around here, I share where to eat, where to stay, what I’d skip, and the experiences I think are actually worth building a trip around.

And when you want someone else to plan it all? I’m a travel advisor, so I do that too.

Travel Smarter: The hotel everyone recommends isn't always the one I'd book for you.

A great hotel has to make sense for your trip—where you'll spend your days, how much time you'll actually spend at the hotel, the room, the location, and, obviously, the food.

Sometimes the upgrade is worth it. Sometimes the smaller hotel wins. And sometimes that gorgeous five-star everyone loves just isn't the right fit.

There isn't one “best” hotel. There's the right hotel for the trip.

What does 6 days of eating in Slovenia actually look like? 🇸🇮🍷

A lot of beefsteak. 😂 But also handmade pasta, local cheeses, schnitzel, incredible BBQ ribs, charcuterie at Casa Elevata, gelato by the Adriatic, Slovenian w**e and even a few grocery store finds that absolutely made the cut.

And that’s one of my favorite ways to experience a destination.

Not just through the restaurants everyone tells you to book, but through the little things too—the local w**e, the grocery store, breakfast made from leftovers and those long meals you’re still talking about after you get home.

Slovenia surprised me in a lot of ways, and the food was definitely one of them.

If a friend called tomorrow and said, “I’m going to Slovenia. What should I actually do?”

This is the list I’d send.

Not because these are necessarily the biggest attractions in Slovenia, but because they’re the experiences I still think about.

Ščurek. The Alps. A picnic beside the Soča. A stay at Casa Elevata. Piran at sunset. And yes, even the grocery store made the list.

I’ll choose wandering the aisles of a foreign supermarket over another souvenir shop every single time.

That’s the difference between a list of attractions and a Road & Table trip.

I want to know what was actually worth the time.

If you’re going to Piran, don’t leave before this happens.

Piran is beautiful during the day.

But I wouldn’t plan it as a quick stop or just a daytime visit and move on.

Stay.

Have dinner. Wander the waterfront. Let the crowds thin and the heat settle. And watch the light change over the Adriatic.

This ended up being one of those evenings that didn’t need a complicated itinerary to feel special.

Sometimes the experience worth planning around isn’t another attraction.

It’s simply being somewhere at the right time.

Travel After Hours: Follow Road & Table if you’d rather know when to linger than simply collect a list of things to see.

Worried about the language barrier in Slovenia? Don’t let it stop you from going.

We found that English was widely spoken in many of the places we visited, but Slovenia also has more languages and dialects than I expected—and there were definitely moments when communication wasn’t quite as straightforward.

One little thing made a difference: start with “Dober dan” (good day), then ask “English?”

It’s simple, it’s respectful, and it gives the person you’re speaking with a chance to switch to English rather than walking in and assuming they do.

You absolutely do not need to speak Slovene to travel comfortably here. But learning a few words before you go? Worth it.

September’s Wanderlust Reads is taking us to Provence, France—with a little murder along the way.

I started Death at the Château Bremont by M.L. Longworth on the flight home from Slovenia, and this one checked quite a few boxes for me before I even opened it: a suspicious death, a château, the South of France, food, w**e, and plenty of secrets.

If you’re new to Wanderlust Reads, I have a weakness for crime novels with a strong sense of place. I want a good mystery, of course, but I also want the book to make me curious about where we’re going. What are we eating? What are we drinking? What does the place feel like? And most importantly…

Does it make me want to book the trip?

I’m still reading, so the verdict on this one will have to wait.

But murder in Provence? We’re off to a very good start.

One of the questions I always ask after a trip is:

What would I plan differently next time? What can I learn for the next trip?

For our Slovenia trip, this is an easy one.

I would ABSOLUTELY make the drive from the coast into the Julian Alps again.

It's long—but the drive through the mountains, the Soča River and our picnic beside the water, and believe it our not even the rain made it one of my favorite days of the trip.

What I wouldn't do is plan a proper dinner before driving home.

We had reservations at Pristava Lepena, and the setting is gorgeous. But by late afternoon we'd already had a full day.

So we canceled our dinner reservation and ate there earlier before heading back.

The food was fantastic; the rain made the experience even better. If you go, get the Pork Ribs! DELISH!

Next time, I'd make that the plan from the beginning: explore slowly, picnic along the Soča, have a late lunch at Pristava Lepena, and drive back before everyone is exhausted.

A good itinerary isn't measured by how much you fit into it.

Sometimes the smartest planning decision is knowing when you're done.

A reservation can be excellent and still wrong for the itinerary.
