Royal Caribbean's Hero of the Seas' first moments afloat! The newest Icon Class ship just crossed a major construction milestone off her bucket list – her first float out. At the shipyard, Hero’s dry dock was filled with more than 90 million gallons of water overnight before she floated into the outfitting pier, where she’ll continue to take shape.

Pictured here at the Meyer Turku Shipyard in Finland, Hero of the Seas will be arriving in Miami next summer - and itineraries are now available for sale!

A quick reminder about a cause that means a lot to us. This January, Suzanne and 20 Holiday Travelers, along with Erik of Off Cape Experiences, will visit Jobreas Primary School near Arusha, Tanzania.

Many of the school’s 300+ students still share older wooden desks, often three children to a desk. We’re helping raise funds for individual desk-and-chair sets, which cost about $80 each.

Donations of any amount are appreciated, and the desks are made locally, supporting both the students and local craftspeople. Checks payable to:

"Today's drive took us through Portugal’s beautiful Douro River Valley. Vineyards everywhere… but definitely not the flat vineyards I’m used to seeing! The vines are planted in terraces carved right into the steep hillsides, creating some pretty amazing scenery.

The Douro Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in the world and, of course, this is where the grapes for Portugal’s famous Port wine are grown. Most of my pictures were taken right through the bus window as we traveled along the highway. Mile after mile of terraced vineyards covering the hillsides — definitely a different view out the bus window! 🍇🚌🇵🇹"

Porto or Lisbon? Suzanne has thoughts...

"I think Porto may have won me over! We’ve passed through some awesome little towns along the way, and I’m still not sure which one is my favorite. But when it comes to Portugal’s two big cities… Porto wins hands-down for me!

We spent just about all of our free time along the Douro River — on it, above it, beside it and, of course, shopping along it. 😂 We cruised the river, rode the gondola for the view from above, and walked both sides.

Six bridges cross the Douro here, each one a little different. And yes, we managed to get plenty of views of those too! 🌉
And apparently we really liked the river, because every meal we ate in Porto, other than breakfast at the hotel, was right along the waterfront. Not a bad place to sit, eat and watch Porto go by.

"Another beautiful stop on our tour of Porto — the Palácio da Bolsa, or Stock Exchange Palace.
From the outside, you really don’t realize what is waiting for you inside! The building dates back to the 1800s and was built by Porto’s Commercial Association as a place for the city’s merchants to conduct business and impress visiting dignitaries.
And impressive it is! Every room seems to be more elaborate than the one before it, with beautiful staircases, carved wood, paintings, gold details and some pretty amazing ceilings.

The showstopper is definitely the Arab Room, inspired by the Alhambra in Spain. It took years to complete and today is still used for official receptions and special events. No longer a working stock exchange, the Palácio da Bolsa is now one of Porto’s most visited historic buildings — and after walking through it, it’s very easy to see why. Definitely one of those places where the pictures don’t quite do it justice!"

"Now a little history lesson…and a little Port wine. 🍷We visited Sandeman, right across the river from Porto in Vila Nova de Gaia, where we learned how Port is made and, of course, sampled two different varieties. It was educational — the tasting was just part of the research. 😂 One thing I didn’t realize: Port is a protected name, similar to Champagne in France. If it is officially called Port, it has to come from Portugal’s Douro region and follow specific production rules.

Sandeman has quite a history of its own. It was started in 1790 by George Sandeman, a young Scotsman who borrowed £300 from his father to start a wine business. He purchased the cellars here in 1811, and Port has been aging in them ever since.
And then there’s the famous Sandeman logo — “The Don.” Created in 1928, he wears a Spanish-style wide-brimmed hat and a Portuguese student’s cape while holding a glass of Port. A little bit of Spain and Portugal rolled into one mysterious-looking guy!

So yes, this morning involved drinking Port before lunch…but when you’re in Porto, I think that qualifies as sightseeing. 🍷🇵🇹"

"This afternoon was spent at the University of Coimbra. I have to admit, when I first saw “university tour” on our itinerary, I wasn’t exactly sure why we were spending part of our morning touring a college. 😂 Halfway through the tour, I completely understood! This place is gorgeous — and definitely not your typical college campus.

Founded in 1290, Coimbra is the oldest university in Portugal and one of the oldest universities in Europe. Parts of the university are housed in a former Royal Palace, and the historic campus is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the highlights was the beautiful Joanina Library, completed in the 1700s and filled with thousands of centuries-old books, elaborate woodwork and gold detailing. No pictures are allowed inside, so the library picture I’m sharing is actually a photo of a postcard — you’ll have to take my word for how beautiful it really is! And apparently protecting all those old books takes a little help from the animal kingdom. 🦇🐈 Bats come out at night and eat insects that could damage the books, and we also learned about the little cat door — cats were traditionally allowed access to help keep the mice away. Quite the pest-control system!

We also visited the beautiful Chapel of São Miguel right on the university grounds. From the outside, you really don’t expect what you’re going to find inside — colorful Portuguese tiles, an incredibly detailed painted ceiling and a huge ornate organ. Thankfully, pictures ARE allowed in here, so these photos are actually mine! 😊

And then there’s the Harry Potter resemblance. J.K. Rowling lived in Portugal in the early 1990s, and Coimbra students have a centuries-old tradition of wearing black academic clothing and long black capes. Add in the ancient buildings and magnificent library and it’s pretty easy to understand all the Hogwarts comparisons! Rowling has never confirmed that Coimbra inspired Harry Potter, but you can certainly see why the connection gets made.

I started wondering why we were touring a university…and left completely understanding why it’s one of Coimbra’s biggest attractions. Definitely not what I was expecting!"

"Today brought us to Fátima, one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Fátima was a small farming village until 1917, when three young shepherd children — Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta — reported seeing apparitions of the Virgin Mary. More than 100 years later, millions of people still come here from all over the world.

It was interesting to see that Fátima is very much an active place of faith, not simply a historic site. We saw a woman making her way on her knees, a traditional act of devotion that some pilgrims make in prayer, thanksgiving or fulfillment of a personal promise. We also saw a long line of people waiting to light candles and had the opportunity to go inside the Basilica, where the three shepherd children are buried.

No matter your religious beliefs, it was interesting to learn the history and see firsthand how meaningful Fátima continues to be to so many people today."
